Mission driven startup with huge opportunity for impact!

    Jan 8, 2022 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

    - Combines the excitement and growth potential of a tech startup with the fulfillment of a mission driven organization - Leadership embodies a “no jerks” mentality. Smarts are prized but egos aren’t welcome, leading to a collaborative, creative and welcoming workplace environment - Every day is different and will include responsibilities that at more mature companies would span many roles and functions

    Cons

    - Startups are building the plane as they fly them, meaning there aren’t established processes for everything. If this makes you uncomfortable (vs excited), the work environment may not be right for you.

A great place to work with a fast-moving development team

    Pros

With a smaller development team and being a startup, Halo allows each developer to really feel like they are making a difference. I am able to see the tangible effects of the tasks that I complete. Halo is also constantly gaining new customers so business outlook looks good.

    Cons

Less structure because it is a start up. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depeending on the person.

    Pros

Halo has been an amazing work experience! The engineering team is incredibly nice; it's a very positive environment. There's clear communication between everyone and a concentrated team effort towards building and supporting the platform. Everyone is working on major features, so your work always has an impact. Even in the most mission critical moments, the team atmosphere is super cordial. I wasn't familiar with the space of science innovation but I've gotten to know the surrounding industries a lot more over the course of working here. There's very smart and talented people working at Halo, especially in leadership. Overall, wonderful place to work.

    Pros

    - Tons of autonomy and ownership on day 1 - Amazing potential / future potential upside given early traction pre-seed - Super open and transparent CEO - Hires junior engineers and helps them grow - All hands meetings are fun and we play games sometimes vs just talking about metrics like some companies - Diverse bunch of folks / not just a tech bros - Great mission of “Moving science forward”

    Cons

    - Can’t get around this in this weird world but my being fully remote can get lonely at times.

    Pros

Halo is a rapidly growing platform that's forging connections between scientists/research labs and companies looking for external innovation. It's a ton of fun working to build the first ever relationship-based network in this space, because you feel like you're directly contributing to progress and innovation. In any startup the people you work with are a huge factor. The Halo team is passionate, driven and dynamic. I love working with them! If you're open to learning and contributing, there are ample opportunities to take part in different meetings and product strategy conversations, and also to listen to the voice of the customer.

    no cons that I've encountered

Great team with an opportunity to make a real impact

Feb 5, 2021 - Software Engineer in Ann Arbor, MI

    Pros

The team is small and the company is doing something new in its field, so everything you do actually matters. Everyone has the opportunity to wear multiple hats; and every decision made directly affects users, the impact of which can usually be seen very clearly. There's something invaluable to be had in being a core contributor, sharing in victories big and small, and feeling a sense of belonging to the team. Speaking of the team- while no (worthwhile) job is expected to be easy, working with this group of individuals often made it feel like a breeze. Although overall a fairly young group, everyone is talented, hard-working, and humble. There aren't any politics or egos to be found, people are willing to ask for and give help freely, and everyone's thoughts and ideas are respected and taken into consideration. Working at a young and small company often comes with the preconceived notion (or at least it did for me) of a poor work-life balance , but that couldn't be farther from the truth here. The team is fully-remote in different time zones across the country, but everyone's time and personal schedules are very much respected. Everyone is flexible and laid-back, and there isn't any micromanagement. Under the mutual understanding that each team member carries out their own responsibilities, they are free to do so in whatever way is most convenient for them. Overall, by virtue of being a startup, there are certain challenges that one will face working here, such as being faced with unfamiliar tasks and trying to make the best decisions without a whole lot of direction to go off of, but doing so alongside great teammates and in a quality work environment can make facing those challenges both rewarding and enjoyable.

    Cons

Not really "cons" per se, but the things that make working at Halo great can also be seen as challenges, depending on the person: -If you aren't self-motivated or have difficulty working in remote/independent environments, this may not be a good fit for you. -At larger companies, there are systems in place to check, double-check, (triple-check?) your work and many other people that will likely go over it before any customers actually see it. If your work having direct consequences on users' experience makes you uncomfortable, this may not be a good fit for you. -If you are the type who prefers to be silo-ed to a specific role, and wearing multiple hats or being faced with new tasks from time to time makes you uncomfortable, this may not be a good fit for you.

Small engineering team and company providing lots of opportunities for collaboration. Your ideas get easily heard and you are able to take on a wide range of roles and tech that you are interested in.

    Cons

The development process is a little messy but the team is so lifting for better clarity as the company grows.
