I have been working at Halton District School Board part-time

    Pros

You get work every day With supply work you can pick and choose when you want to work. Some schools are amazing with good support. You will get so many full time opportunities and LTO's if schools see that you are good at what you do. I got offered a full time position on the first week of school. I turned it down because I value the flexibility/autonomy while on Supply.

    Cons

Not enough pay. High expectations in some schools and some Sert Teachers offer little support. Supplies are sometimes put in unsafe positions to make things more convenient for the Sert. Supplies are sometimes not given the info about a violent child. Again this all has to do with how good the Sert is at the job. It also boils down to the Principal keeping an eye on supply staffs safety. Not all Special Needs Teachers/Principals have lapses in judgement but some do and want their day to go easy. They might not necessarily think what's best for the child and the safety of the staff. This problem is at every board. Be careful and keep in tabs with Union. Overall, the HDSB is a great company to work at. I get sad when summer comes around the corner because I've developed strong relationships with colleagues and school staff.
