I have been working at Hamburg Sud North America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Human Resources has been supportive when responding to questions in general and most recently about the recent acquisition with Maersk. Although there has been minimal communication, I feel that they have been honest and will communicate info as received from
Hamburg. If they don't have the answers they are honest and say they do not know.

    Cons

Management in general has not communicated anything about the Maersk acquisition. Trade Mangement in particular if you resign from their department they write you off completely and don't even acknowledge your dedication over the years as soon as you are no use to Their Dept. they write you off.

    Advice to Management

Trade Management VP's need to be more professional when staff is departing and for good reasons since there is uncertainty about the future.

I have been working at Hamburg Sud North America full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good staff, interesting industry. Good place to work for a year or 2 right after college but get out after that.

    Cons

HR controls every department and ran the company and the culture in to the ground. The good reviews about HR are so obviously posted by them. Company would be in much better shape if the 2 ancient employees in HR stopped making everyone's life miserable. Maybe relax on all the cigarette breaks and learn what HR is in 2017. The OD of perfume doesn't cover up the smoke by the way, it only makes it smell like a nursing home and it's offensive.

    Advice to Management

Too late, lack of leadership is the reason 2 people in HR were able to poison the entire organization.

Depending on department, career mobility and advancement varies

    Advice to Management

Provide a career development track for all employees, not just the Sales teams

    Pros

Let me think, nope could not think of ONE thing.

    Cons

HR can't get along with one another - I think it's time to bring in new Management and new blood. People walk around this company so grumpy!

    Advice to Management

Promote the people within and fire the deadheads! Try practicing your core values and live by them...

I worked at Hamburg Sud North America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I had one of a few good managers. Worked with some great co workers.

    Cons

HR is the worst I've seen. They actually told me on exit interview Hamburg Sud is a stepping stone for college grads. They don't value good workers or try to keep good workers. HR NEEDS TO BE UPDATED. Nothing but the worst in HR.

    Advice to Management

FIX HR and you will have talented employees stay longer.

Compensation is poor especially for entry level positions
Not a lot of opportunity for advancement
Established cliques make it hard to get to know your fellow employees
HR is a nightmare to deal with

    Advice to Management

Be more approachable and try to implement some sort of formal training regimen.

I have been working at Hamburg Sud North America (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Office is newly refurnished. The company is privately owned so there is little risk of being laid off, even with the poor current state of the shipping industry. Pay and benefits are average. Recent expansion into transpacific services has created a good amount of new job openings and opportunities for advancement, especially if you are willing to relocate.

    Cons

The company culture is terrible, which mainly stems from extremely outdated HR policies. Poor communication between managers and their workers and between departments causes a lot of resentment in the office. Very little formal training also causes confusion, especially with the roll-out of the company's new operating system. Not much ability to work from home, create flexible hours.

    Advice to Management

Communicate better with your workers. If people don't understand why certain changes are happening and don't feel comfortable asking, retaining employees (especially younger) will become extremely difficult. Perks as small as Casual Fridays would also go a long way in building some kind of company pride.
