I have been working at Hampton City School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employees are really laid back and and
Administration is mostly on top of things and are always willing to listen.

    Cons

Salary is not competitive. If you do a search of neighboring school districts you will find hampton is lagging behind.

    Advice to Management

They really need to do a compensation study and bring salaries up to other states standards.

I have been working at Hampton City School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Benefits Package and holidays, weekends and school holidays are automatically days off.

    Cons

Low pay rate for all positions available including management. Promotional opportunities are very limited.

    Advice to Management

Paying good people a higher base rate with a more traditional 30/60/90 day structure for reviews of your work and salary would help retain employees. High turnover and organization within the company are both highly concerning.

I worked at Hampton City School District (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent work community. Hampton city a schools focuses on collaboration and working as a team to accomplish the vision and mission of the school division.

    Cons

Implementing curriculum was a difficult challenge. Teachers are required to teach materials so students can pass state standards. As a result many student do not achieve basic skills.

I have been working at Hampton City School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is challenging at times on every level. If one chose this field and education in urban areas you should know what to expect. Supportive Division Leadership and colleagues. Watching students develop into their own person. Holidays and some breaks off. I've worked in many divisions over the years but HCS truly does care about students, staff, parents and community.

    Cons

Parents not taking responsibility for their child's actions. Behavior cannot be corrected unless their is collaboration. HCS rushing initiatives wo testing first. Definitely need raises!!! This single action will help w low morale. Promote from within the division. Any administrator position NEEDS to have TEACHING experience (I.e Central office). This type of promoting contributes to morale.

    Advice to Management

Be visable and in schools OFTEN! The only time I see anyone from Division Leadership is if something is wrong. Again- contributes to low morale. Yes I have a PH.D just like you- we are equally intelligent so please do not treat those like myself or my staff as inferior- they work hard for for HCS. Give systematic raises ASAP and last but not least - pay teachers throughout the summer!!!! Every division around does it. Just bc HR says put .8% away for summer is not good enough. Just do it so we can finally compete with other divisions that I consistently lose teachers to. I am their voice!
