I worked at Hanover County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good administrative team at the time, although changes are often. Kids were better than average. Teachers were professional and self-motivated.

    Cons

Overtime for no extra pay. There's always a few disciplinary issues...but it's to be expected.

    Advice to Management

Plenty of incentives for a job well done. Remember, teachers are isolated from other adults much of the day. A little positive interaction goes a long way.

I worked at Hanover County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Just an average place to work.

    Cons

Their human resources department is very dishonest, will hide the fact that they only offer temporary position that is written on the contract. Nothing about "temporary" will be mentioned during interview, and before you received the contract.

    Advice to Management

Give people the facts regarding job positions.

    Pros

Very rewarding to help youth become confident, competent individuals and to instill a desire for life long learning. So exciting to work with young people who will soon be stepping out into the world as happy and productive citizens.

    Cons

Soooooo many hours outside of the classroom are necessary. Must be able to work with enthusiasm and energy for the students' sake, even though you are rarely well rested.

    Advice to Management

Be very careful to place only the best leaders in the role of principal of a school. I've been very fortunate to have worked with some of the best. Allow teachers to evaluate principals and asst principals. School Board officials need to have "eyes and ears" on each leader they have chosen..
