I have been working at Hapag-Lloyd full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits relative to other competitors are phenomenal (401k is basically 6% emp + 9% HL, insurance is very very reasonable), work is easy, knowledgeable and experienced work force that is eager to educate for those who ask questions. Family friendly company with competent leadership.

You won't get rich here, but pay is slightly better than industry average. Decent bonuses depending on global performance.

    Cons

A few department managers that are disrespectful and short sighted (but let's be honest you'll find at least one at every company), but they're generally the exception.
Advancement is difficult in the SSL industry so don't expect to rise quickly.
But the most notable con --

The latest UASC merger was handled incredibly dishonestly when it came to staff retention. Area employees were told that some functions were being relocated and that they'd have an opportunity to stay aboard via interviews with other departments, but that unless they were willing to move there would be some severances.
During this process they were told that current temps would not be given priority over current full time staff. They were also told that they would have multiple opportunities to interview as new positions arose, and would be given priority over outside hires.

Not only was the process disorganized and haphazard, but both temps and outside hires were given jobs over qualified and tenured staff, contrary to what was disseminated through HR and management.
The lack of honesty and lack of dignity shown to those being let go was appalling and disgraceful for an otherwise transparent and well run company. It left a bad taste in everyone's mouth and will not be forgotten when receiving future corporate communications.

I wouldn't -not- recommend the company, but be aware that they will not always deal with you honestly.

    Advice to Management

Honesty, integrity, accountability. There are no easy layoffs, but treat people with a basic level of decency.

    I worked at Hapag-Lloyd full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Management was flexible when it came to life changing events. They did whatever they could within reason to work with emplyees. Most people are great to work with and decent salaries and bonuses when we got one.

    Cons

The company is large, but it is structured in a way to keep most jobs on the same level. Advancement in this company could mean waiting for someone to leave their position or relocating to another state or country. Some jobs require a great level of responsibility, specialized training, and skill, but the pay level does not reflect the complication and seriousness those jobs.

    Advice to Management

To the top level decision makers in the company...make smarter decisions about the location of your offices. Some past decisions have not been cost effective.

I have been working at Hapag-Lloyd full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People are friendly. The location is close to home. The benefits package is competitive. Managers are supportive and seem to care about their teams.

    Cons

There is limited mobility between departments, so it's hard to be cross trained. Shifts are tenure based so changing them takes a considerable amount of time.

    I worked at Hapag-Lloyd full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Only saving grace was being friends with some of the other team managers and co-workers.

    Cons

    - HR really needs to have some people skills. They are very rude and not the kindest people out there. One of my co-workers was asked "oh, you still work her? I thought you quit!" ...
    - No room for growth
    - You are either a customer service representative or a manager. No where in between.

    Advice to Management

Please listen to your staff's advice on process improvements and pay the employees a little more.

I have been working at Hapag-Lloyd full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people. A lot of long time employees leads to a family atmosphere. Management team tries to be open and approachable.

    Cons

High pressure due to challenging and competitive industry. Consistently pushing "more with less" philosophy. Heavy reliance on in house computer systems that are not too intuitive or user friendly.
