I worked at Harbor Freight Tools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Vacation accrual, bonuses, benefits, 20% discount.

    Cons

Very unprofessional work environment. I had fellow co works, District managers, upper management all swear consistently. I've been doing tgis for 17 years and couldn't stand more than 2 weeks because of this. Another store manager was in her mid 20s and acted like a child and made fun of her assistants constantly but it was supported by the dm. Expect to work 70 hrs during their parking lot sale. A lot of "blacked out weeks" for vacation- around 12 weeks total. If you want to take a step back in your career, hft is for you.

    Advice to Management

Be professional. I don't need to hear the f word 4 thousand times a day.
We all know employers are closing, quit gloating about it, one day it'll catch up to you.
    Treat employees better.
Give full time associates full time hours. The assistant store managers were getting 34 hrs a week and supervisors 32. But that's how you make your bonuses.

    Pros

Great company to work for. Owner takes care of people really well. Have seen him do things for his team other companies would not have done

    Cons

Middle managers have issues with their egos. Have seen middle management play favoritism on numerous occasions. They need to realize each store has a little uniqueness

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Harbor Freight Tools (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good product, benefits are good, vac time is nice

    Cons

I love working retail and building a team. Hft has issues from very poor infrastructure to reacting and not planning well. They expect people pt making pennies to change there scedule on a dime to help the store when most work 2 jobs.

    Advice to Management

Stop talking about process unless you have seen it done. I have yet to see a single store run truck, tags, pls, or cycle count correctly. Stop saying you talk to associates when out of 10 visits its happen 3 times. Get on the same page and no more Dicksport's people they have poor attitudes and leadership is not what they are good at.

I have been working at Harbor Freight Tools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They are a growing company so the opportunity for growth is there but moving would be required to do it. Some of the promotions are great and fun for the customer and employees. There is a very nice rate to acquire PTO.

    Cons

The schedule changes constantly and to the corporate whims. These tend to effect work/life balance very badly. It will happen sometimes during the current week schedule. There are to many logistic functions that have to happen over night many times the night before a holiday. There does not seem to be much promotion from within. It seems to be a lot of hiring outside the company to fill key positions. There are times when many sales promotions are running at the same time. It confuses the customer and employees.

    Advice to Management

Provide more opportunity to promote within a persons district not having to move out of an area or state to do it. Treat the employees and middle management with dignity and respect. Have one promotion going at a time not multiple promotions. It becomes to complicated for the customer and employees.

    Pros

Rate of pay is good. Benefits are good. Bonus is hard to achieve but when you can achieve it, it's good.

    Cons

Upper management has created an atmosphere where more people are working out of fear of consequences than they are of desire to do a good job.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating your direct reports as an inferior species. Be thankful for results and understand that sometimes your processes are broken. Understand that sometimes your people have to deviate to obtain results

I worked at Harbor Freight Tools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very fast pace, day flys bye as there is a lot to do. Very structured company with disciplined processes. Customers are almost always happy (very rare in retail) competitive management pay and good benefits. I only left for a much better opportunity and to get out of retail In general. My employees were great, worked with some great Harding working individuals.

    Cons

A lot of overnights, and the "parking lot" events will consume your life for 3 weeks, since they are held every 6 weeks it can be challenging on the home life. The events themselves are fun, the prep is daunting. IT department is atrocious.

    Advice to Management

Lessen the frequency of parking lot sales, it will make the events more meaningful and give a better work life balance to managers.

    Pros

Good company to work for overall. Growing quickly so opportunities for advancement are there for those that want to apply themselves.

    Cons

Work Life Balance is non existent for a manager. The companies answer to a slow sales day is for the manager to let the other supervisors off and take their shift. Marketing strategy is getting stagnant leading to soft sales.

    Advice to Management

Give store managers a little more autonomy to run their stores. Improve payroll structure to allow the stores enough help to take care of the customers and keep the stores stocked.
