I worked at Harbor Freight Tools full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Opening new stores every week. Personal time off accumulates quickly. A lot of room for advancement if you work hard and have a good attitude.

    Cons

Work a lot of weekends and holidays but that’s the norm for retail.

    Advice to Management

Can be hard to keep good people if there are no full time positions open in your store.

I have been working at Harbor Freight Tools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I started at hft over 4 years ago. The first 2 years were great. Good benefits decent pay. The structure was solid. You came into work knowing exactly what was expected of you and hft followed the sop strictly.

    Cons

Hft now uses an automated schedule system for labor. This system was untested poorly executed and the calculations for support are so far off you can never achieve payroll goals. On top of implementing a new system they have little to no traing at all. Often times just throwing people into a position with just some very basic videos to use as training. What's worse is hft doesn't believe in training hours so dont expect to be trained. What's worse than all of that is they have updated to new systems and they use policies from 2012 that are so far behind the new systems they use, that its nearly impossible to keep up. Again lack of any training. When I first started it was easy to hold someone accountable for not performing thier job. So much has changed that leadership on the store is no liable for any and all mistakes made. You will be termed before an associate will. It only takes 2 associates to accuse you of anything and you will be termed. Been there done that. The amount of corporate greed is out of control. Dont expect support it will fall on def ears.

    Advice to Management

Reevaluate your company. No one at corporate is being held accountable. Not category management. Not hr. Not anyone. There is a complete disconnect from store level to corporate. Often asking for miracles from no payroll. What happened to hft that used to test anything, like policies and pricing and planograms and new systems prior to implementing. What happened to training. There is none. Invest in leadership traing. You write policies and dont invest any training or guidance into them. You cant expect people to read something and have the same interpretation as the next. It's great the company is growing. However hft is building a name as a horrible place to work.

I have been working at Harbor Freight Tools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not overworked, good work life balance for retail, fair compensation, and growing incredibly fast so there is room to promote quickly especially if you're willing to move

    Cons

There is an SOP for everything, and your performance is measured by how well your store follows the company instructions. I felt like I had no personal control over my store. Company is also changing where surprise visits from corporate are becoming more frequent.

I worked at Harbor Freight Tools full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great product but they fall short on taking care of their people

    Cons

Dishonesty with upper management. No support. No work life balance. Poor pay

    Advice to Management

One of your principles is "Do the right thing" well you dont and you dont care about store leaders and provide support. There is a disconnection and dishonesty among your District Leaders and its unfortunate

Good team atmosphere, great company for promoting talent from within. Senior management very helpful, fun place to work

Work/ life balance almost non- existant, vacation days rescheduled frequently due to staffing issues within management team. Training after promotions for new roles frequently did not have enough training to assist in providing success for employees

I worked at Harbor Freight Tools full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Met some great mentors and associates

    Cons

High Level leadership(Regional Managers) do not care about anybody but "their" people. With the exception of The Executive VP`s who were always excellent people and always very friendly.

    Advice to Management

Take a good look at why you are losing people that have been with the company for many years and have been above expectation. Want to push people out instead of help develop.
