I have been working at Harlem Educational Activities Fund full-time

    Pros

    Great kids and great location

    Cons

Terrible work life balance. No leadership from CEO. She is out of the office most of the time and doing her personal speaking engagements that have been approved by the Board of Directors. It is unconscionable that donor dollars that should be going to educational programming are going to her salary while she is pursuing her personal speaking engagements. Numbers presented to donors are inflated. We accommodate our corporate partners so they can check off their “volunteer engagement days” while sacrificing valuable programming time with the students. Someone, please help us!

    Advice to Management

The Board or Directors should be doing their jobs! Money is wasted and the “expansion” plan they have is not a plan at all. CEO needs to go!

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Harlem Educational Activities Fund full-time

    Pros

Organization is centrally located in Harlem

    Cons

Poor design. The program staff (who are all people of color) work in an open space with no privacy and the executive staff (who are all white) work behind closed doors and are severely disconnected. It seems like there are two separate entities trying to run one organization and serve two separate missions. The kids are suffering as a result and all the upper management cares about are their numbers and donors and the promises they make to them. They make the kids attend events to satisfy their contractual obligations and the staff turnover is very very high. There's only a few of us left who've only been here a couple of years and have real concerns about the future of this organization and our wellbeing. There have been 3 or 4 program directors in just a few years and many students, families AND MANY EMPLOYEES (more then 10) have left AND WILL CONTINUE TO LEAVE if HEAF doesn't get it together soon. THIS PLACE IS TOXIC!

    Pros

Team environment, Positive energy, Students are so nice,

    Cons

REPLACE THIS CEO! All they care about is money and not really touching on the real issues with the students and employees, unorganized, The CEO pretends to be so perfect and acts like she is really doing her job when board members visit. Does not pay their employees enough, job performance reviews never really get anywhere, No one has been here more than 2+ years, people are always quitting and they're always hiring .. just stay away honestly

"NOT a Healthy Place to Work"

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Harlem Educational Activities Fund part-time

    Pros

    The students and their families.

    Cons

-The leadership does not care for people of color and the communities they were hired to serve. They care more about self image and the numbers than about the wellbeing of staff and students. -This organization is deeply entrenched in the non-profit industrial complex, meaning they link up with corporations who really don't care for HEAF students. -HEAF puts more energy in seeking out corporate dollars and endorsements than on building a warm and welcoming office culture, a strong and deliberate social justice based educational curriculum, and building connections with the communities of Harlem and Bed-Stuy.

    Advice to Management

-The Executive Board needs to replace the ED and bring in someone who has a genuine connection to Harlem and Bed-Stuy. The new ED should also be skilled in developing a HEALTHY office culture that will stop the high staff turnover and will help the organization grow as a legitimate caring and welcoming place to work and learn. -Stop trying to expand city-wide and nationally when you don't even have everything together in the Harlem office! Seriously stop. It is absolutely detrimental to the students YOU DO serve.

    Pros

    Amazing families and student participants!

    Cons

Their turnover is increasingly high at an organization that previously boasted employees staying on 8 years+. New waves of employees brought on extreme unprofessionalism and nonchalant attitudes towards the students they are trying to serve. Even worst, there is staff in program director roles who hold racist views on people of color and talks down to students and staff alike. Send inappropriate racist text messages to staff. It's a sad day. This organization has so much potential. Then on the other end other staff are undermining the executive team by sharing organizational information with students. Imagine 16-year od participants being aware of terminations, budget constraints and a host of other things through texts from presumably trusted adults. Extremely toxic culture. If you are looking for a healthy work culture run!

I worked at Harlem Educational Activities Fund part-time for less than a year

    Pros

There is an emphasis on prioritizing students and collaborating with others towards that end goal. I appreciated the environment as a place where people share ideas!

    Cons

There could be better transparency amongst the higher ups but again I was a temporary summer employee so I could only gauge so much there.

    Pros

Excellent group of smart, ambitious and articulate students. Parents are motivated, and committed.

    Cons

The CEO/ED is entitled, and infantile. She demonstrates poor leadership skills and fails to mange her staff. The organization suffers from high turnover because of the CEO/ED lack of interpersonal skills. Textbook narcissist. Staff are overworked and receive no compensation for additional hours worked. The hierarchy prevents clear communication and creates a culture of separatism.

    Advice to Management

Find anew ED with immediacy, one who is able to play with others nicely. Offer opportunities for staff development and growth.
