I have been working at Harlem Village Academies for more than a year

    Pros

HVA is made up of extremely hard working, intelligent, problem-solving adults. I have learned a lot from my co-workers and feel very supported by them. HVA offers a lot of autonomy in the classroom which allows teachers flexibility and options to create a supportive, appropriate environment for children. There is opportunity to present ideas and change when things are not working and/or there better options.

    Cons

With most charters the extended days lead to long hours. People work very hard and in turn leads to lots of hours both in and out of the building spent planning, problem solving, analyzing, etc... I think the benefit of having a variety of well-experienced teachers and adults in our school is everyone looks out for each other to ensure people are supported and taking care of themselves, even though this work can be exhausting...

        Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Harlem Village Academies full-time

        Pros

-I worked with the most hard working, supportive, positive team in my work history. We graded together, cleaned classrooms together, and supported each other when necessary. If help was needed, help was given. -I got excellent coaching (just be prepared to ask for help!)

        Cons

-very disconnected from CEO, decisions are made at a management level without advice from teaching teams, blame is placed on CEO often -be prepared to work long hours and manipulate curriculum and schedule to fit the needs of your students and teaching style

        Advice to Management

Communicate with the people that work with you- there are people with tremendous ideas to better the school, if only they were able to voice these ideas.

I worked at Harlem Village Academies full-time

        Pros

context: worked as a classroom teacher for one academic year *opportunity to adapt curriculum in ways appropriate for class, specific students, etc. *there are a lot of incredibly intelligent, passionate, and driven people at HVA who are working hard to do what's best for children *focus on social emotional learning and culturally responsive practice *in the beginning, opportunities for feedback and reflection

        Cons

*lack of support for teachers and students -- teachers are stretched thin and have to push really hard to receive professional support and resources; while HVA addresses students' social emotional needs, there's a lot of room for growth *work-life balance (pretty standard for charter schools)

        Advice to Management

offer more methods of receiving feedback (e.g. surveys, exit interviews, check-ins, etc.), norm feedback/coaching across the school, and find ways to truly be reflective/turnkey feedback
