I worked at Harley Marine Services full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

A good amount of promotion from within for entry level positions. Very supportive of employees when under personal duress and family obligations (minus paid maternity). Great benefits package.

    Cons

Lots of nepotism, micromanagement, and promotions granted to employees due to favoritism rather than performance. Good benefits outweighed standard earnings for competitive urban markets.

    Advice to Management

Have faith in a department head's ability to effectively make decisions and manage their team.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Harley Marine Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The building is cool. Most of the workers are good. The boat guys are cool.

    Cons

Management won't let you do your job without getting in your way. So many middle managers. Boats are old and in disrepair. Never enough down time to repair anything. Just get the job done and don't worry that you are spilling oil out the fitting. Safety and procedures are a joke.

    Advice to Management

Cut half of the middle managers. Trust your sailors. Let the boats get fixed right before running them into the ground. You're gonna get someone killed.

I have been working at Harley Marine Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Free Snacks/Food Nice Office View 'Some' Decent People If You Like Just A Job, Don't Aspire To Build A Career, and Simply Push Paper. This Is A Place For You. CEO is nice...

    Cons

Bad Management and Leadership Very Unorganized Poor Org Chart Reporting Structure Spend Management Is Bad Bad Office Location/Traffic. Short Staffed. Not A Productive Work Environment, If You Are Truly Trying To Make A Difference. Employee turnover rate is worst I've seen. Good old boys club.

    Advice to Management

Stop professing change management, safety, and a positive culture. As you don't have the structure, discipline, processes, and personnel to execute like a major in the industry. Mom and Pop operations. Talk is cheap, take a look in the mirror and fix the values HMS could stand for. HMS is like a nice 2018 Bentley on the outside, but the inside/engine needs a major dry docking and overhaul, at best. Potential... employees, you have been warned (do your homework). A company that can't get out of it's own way.

I worked at Harley Marine Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Equal time and they do try to honor it within a few days, benefits aren’t terrible, paid education and license expenses. Growing company so they have opportunities for guys with fresh licenses. Multiple companies across the US. HR team can be very polite and professional for the most part.

    Cons

When they have it out for you, you’re done. They will regularly ignore their own rules and manufacture reasons to can you if they want to. They run boats literally until they won’t run and only fix issues if their contracts are threatened or the government steps in (the articouple system on the ATB Jake Shearer in the inside passage and what happened is very public knowledge). Harley was a more coveted company... years ago and they guys who have longevity there view working there as a privilege that the rest of the industry lacks the benefits and schedule Harley offers but as the years went on they came down to industry standard. Olympic Tug and Barge and their management team are a joke, filled with boat rejects and have a “good ‘Ol boy” system, which seems surprising for a Seattle company. The recidivism rate for employees there is high (managers and crews being regularly fired for regulatory non-compliance then rehired at a different position). They are a bunch of smooth talkers and will say anything to get you on a boat, going so far as to lie about your pay on the phone but hide behind the offer letter, given to you just hours before you crew up. Dispatch is a joke, they will call you when you’re at work not knowing where you’re at or if you’re even working. If anything happens to you there, DOCUMENT IT!! Always have a paper trail for everything you do there so when the office comes down on you you have actual proof. The office is known to delete complaints so when you try to follow up they play clueless. Their world headquarters is the epitome of hubris. The area surrounding the office is guarded 24/7 with a gate, guard, and cameras whereas the employee lot is blocks down the road surrounded only by a chain link fence and barbed wire which regularly got broken into and plenty of windows smashed with the management turning a blind eye to the issue. Save the hassle and take a cab to work if you must.

    Advice to Management

Follow your own rules! Quit sweeping safety issues under the rug and hire professionals as opposed to drunks and rejects for your management team!! And build an actual wall around the crew lot or bring it inside the WHQ gates!

I have been working at Harley Marine Services full-time

    Pros

The company has dictates a limit for spending on food, but rarely enforces it.

    Cons

Management is completely disconnected from what they are asking the vessel crews to do. Dispatch office acts as if they are gods and should crews should be happy to be allowed to work aboard the vessels.

    Advice to Management

Learn more about what you are asking employees to do. Understand that the reason competitors are spending more on crew comfort and equipment is because it is needed not luxury or "Gucci"
