I worked at Harleysville Group part-time (More than a year)

    Keep up good work

  2. "Used to be a better place before Nationwide took over. Not so much now."

    Pros

Good experience working with commercial accounts and Northeast venues. Claims people are exposed to a wide variety of different situations.

    Cons

Nationwide has changed culture and benefits, for the worse. Harleysville used to be a small to mid sized company but now the culture and environment has changed markedly.

    Advice to Management

    Bonus structure unbalanced

    Advice to Management

    Stop lying...

I worked at Harleysville Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good management, very open and very modern.

    Cons

Dependent upon where you are, and who you're managers are, it can be quite stifling. Overall, I enjoy the majority of my time there, however it is clear that there are favorites and those favorites always are given a boost over where you are.

I worked at Harleysville Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There was a good work / life balance. The flexible scheduling allowed my to attend my child's school functions, doctors appointments, etc. Most management cared about the well-being of their employees and they encouraged growth and professional development. As long as you did your job, it was a fun, open, busy place to be.

    Cons

It can sometimes be a little like a 'high school hallway' ; meaning there were cliques and it can come down to being a popularity contest. For example, if you had a 'top star' co-worker or a 'patron' manager running campaign for you, you could get into any other department or title you wanted, but if not, your advancement options could be very limited.

    Advice to Management

I've heard management has made a lot of positive changes, but they may want to keep a strong focus on just the professional views and actions, and not let the personal feelings and/or opinions get in the way.

I have been working at Harleysville Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Hours are 8-4:30. So work-life balance is fine. They allow work at home, which not many companies do, and it's very helpful.

    Cons

Harleysville Insurance treated employees great before it was bought out by Nationwide. Morale has gone down a lot since.
Nationwide took away our company parties, our 3 pm leave on the day before a holiday, Denim Fridays, great benefits, employee appreciation day/week. It got rid of anything that boosted employee morale. It blows me away that they thought they could do away with everything and it wouldn't have any influence on morale.
Also, everyone sleeps with everyone. Doesn't matter if you're married, affairs happen on the regular. There's a lot of high school drama.

    Advice to Management

Bring back the things that showed appreciation to your employees.

    Pros

Everyone knows everyone. People are helpful.

    Cons

Can be a hyper-emotional work environment.

    Advice to Management

Settle down and focus on the job at hand.

    Pros

Associates have good hearts and are hard working.

    Cons

    Nationwide is destroying this company!
Promises made during my heavy recruitment turned out to be false.
If your career is booming elsewhere and you like the culture, do not come here.
Benefits, Bonus and 401k are nothing more than a joke post takeover.

    Advice to Management

I am watching what was once a strong culture implode. I see a large population of high performing staff members litter the web with their resumes. It's sad because when recruited I wanted to spend my career here now all I want to do is run away because we can't service our customers without appropriate funding levels!

I have been working at Harleysville Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

nice boss, close to home, many have left and returned

    Cons

benefits are not the greatest: salaries are below national average and health benefits cost a fortune and deductibles are very high

    Advice to Management

Good job if you need a few bucks not great for the career dreamers

    Pros

System constantly being upgraded/enhanced for better performance. UW are friendly for the most part. Supervisors have an open door policy.

    Cons

Use bogus excuses for not being financially compensated, especially if when hired you were offered a certain $$, then after the probationary period your promoted in title only and told since you came in at a higher rate, there is no $$ increase.... held accountable for errors made from underwriters and/or agents. Training is not all that knowledgable, benefits aren't all that great, morale is low.
