I worked at Harmonic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Technology continues to be new and exciting to work with.

    Cons

Staffing is limited, and when jobs are eliminated, you're expected to pick up the work load. Most departments have been severely understaffed for years.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of you employees so they stay.

I have been working at Harmonic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule (WFH, lots of PTO)
Camaraderie in the Beaverton, OR, office

    Cons

The Agile development process was never fully implemented across the company in a consistent way. Every team does something different, making it hard to work cross-functionally.
High level decision making focuses on short term gains; not enough long term planning or serious tracking to a defined long-term schedule.
No employee training on company products or development process. It's up to new hires to find someone who has tribal knowledge of a what we do and how we do it.
Working from a satellite office can sometimes feel like being a second string player.

I have been working at Harmonic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very interesting technology if you are into video streaming.

    Cons

Company is acquisition-crazy. Lots of duplicate team. Lack of communication or unified direction.

    Advice to Management

    Try to eliminate redundant teams.

    Pros

    Nice Building with good cafeteria.

    Cons

Delusional management, with a CEO that acts like a cheerleader. He and his team are incapable of delivering on any of their predictions.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate one layer of Management. Company this size doesn't need VPs and Sr VPs.

  6. "Poor Customer service"

    Pros

    Spectrum products are very reliable

    Cons

This company must take in huge SLA revenues
Customer service (TAC) database must be horribly out of sync with reality
    Very sluggish customer responses
Certain account managers have arrogant and elitist attitudes toward end users
    Customer focus is very poor

    Advice to Management

Fire yourselves. Resign for the sake of the company and staff.
    New management...
Make sure your TAC people are EXPERTS on the product.
Focus on taking care of the customer

I worked at Harmonic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Hard to come up with any pro's.

    Cons

Morale is very very low. Upper Management does not engage with individual contributors or separate organizations. Most of the upper management has been there well over 15 years and seem to put very little effort in trying to keep up with the rest of the industry. A day doesn't go by that you won't hear someone say, "Well, we've been doing it like that for years and it seems to work". There is very little, almost NO support from IT for developing new processes. Tools provided are very old and out of date. Projects sit for a very long time. Some just fall off the list with no explanation.

    Advice to Management

Come down out of the clouds and talk to some of the individual contributors. Lots of them have wonderful ideas.

I worked at Harmonic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are better than most places in the same industry. The medical plans for single employees were great very low cost and high benefits. You get to work with some VERY smart people and pick up a lot of knowledge about many different areas of expertise. The pay is above industry levels, at least during the time I was there.

    Cons

No work-life balance in the group I worked in. Travel 90% of the time and when not traveling to customer sites they wanted their remote workers to be in the valley. My group was very short staffed and never hiring. Most of their products were repackaged versions of other companies work. This was a real bummer for me since I had been so impressed with them as a customer that I jumped at the chance to work for them. It's a very political place to work, if you are not prepared for that Harmonic is not a good place to find yourself.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afrade of new ideas that come from you people. If you don't agree with something your people are telling you don't take it out on them when your manager comes and asks you to do exactly what your guys were telling you needed to happen.
