I have been working at Harnham full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I joined Harnham’s New York office after working in recruitment for a number of years for a larger brand. I wanted more control over my career progression, and to join a business in a period of growth.

Although Harnham is in it’s first few years of operating, having the backing of an already successful British business has made the transition easier.
I prefer working in an environment focused on Business Development, and so this has really suited me.

The commission structure is rewarding, and whilst there was a lot of change after I joined, I’ve enjoyed being part of creating a culture that we can be proud of, and it’s started to come together.

    Cons

I think culturally the company hasn’t hired the right graduates for the consultant role which has had an impact on the working environment and meant the more senior members have been doing a lot more hand holding.
The BD element is harder than the candidate side for all of us, but a necessary part of the job. The results are now starting to come back from this but you need to see it through for a longer period of time. As a senior and an upcoming leader in the business its frustrating to see people give up before they reach this point.

    Advice to Management

Be clear on expectations during the interview process, we’re all here to be successful and to have great careers. Make sure that consultants coming in have a thorough understanding of the challenges of the role and BD nature of it so that we’re training people that want this type of recruitment career.

    Pros

Slavery was outlawed in 1865 and brought back by Harnham. You only get paid enough to buy food. THE MANAGERS TAKE ALL YOUR MONEY.

    Cons

Do yourself a favor and DON'T WASTE YOUR LIFE HERE LIKE I DID

I have been working at Harnham full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You'll work with some nice people but they probably won't stick around for very long. People come and go like crazy.

    Cons

The managers have no market knowledge especially here in New York (I don't know how it is in SF or UK) and just don't know what they are doing. Most of the 'leaders' have no genuine leadership skills at all - just not nice people. Salary is way below the market average. Staffing is long hours we all know that, but you're made to feel bad at walking out at 7! I'd avoid at all costs. I think there's only 3 or 4 people who have done recruitment before in here and it's not been for long either.

    Advice to Management

If only you cared about your employees

Thank you for your review. Having read through a couple of times, there's a few things that stand out as inconsistent with the day-to-day running of our New York office.

I worked at Harnham full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Onboarded with a great group of consultants at my level to learn with

    Cons

    - Base salary is lower than many other recruitment agencies in SF and is too low to maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle in such an expensive city.
    - Realistic amount of commission you will earn in your first year is overstated. You will probably make 5-10k on top of your base.
    - Management is inexperienced and micromanagement is prevalent
    - There is an unspoken expectation and pressure to work 10-12 hour days
    - KPI expectations were inconsistent and changed each time I met with my manager based on the performance of the office or their mood at that time
    - Pushed to perform business development as a priority over placing candidates at open jobs, which made clients unhappy and consultants earn little commission.
    - Management bad mouths employees to other employees behind their back
    - Very high turnover rates - both voluntary and not

    Advice to Management

    - Better development of new grads or hire more experienced staff if the expectations are as is
    - Executive hires should be more experienced
    - Work life balance needs improvement
