I have been working at Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Being responsible for putting a talented team together that shares ideas and promotes mental health recovery in the community.
-Working with good people who are committed to the mission of the agency.
-Helping patients and having them simply say 'thank you'.
-Good Salaries, benefits are available for your entire family, not just the employee.

    Cons

-Moving up in the agency can be difficult, I have found that many departments would prefer to hire their own staff and for that reason, it can be difficult to be taken seriously for an interview when there is already 'the chosen one' waiting in the 'wings'.

    Advice to Management

At least once a year, awards for appreciation should be given to deserving staff in various roles.

You can apply for a variety of different jobs offered in the field of MH. Are good about hiring from within. Growth potential

    Cons

Change, Change, Change. If you do not like change and do not move at fast pace, this location is not for you. Burn out is bound to happen here.

Listen to your employees for advice on retention.

I worked at Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1. Good first job with decent pay for recently graduated psych. students
    2. Get exposure to many different disorders and agencies around Houston
    3. Staff is supportive. Big emphasis on self-care. It's very easy to staff cases for second opinions when needed.
    4. Lots of autonomy. You make your own schedule, write your own progress notes, and design your own treatment plans (with input of course)
    5. You will walk away with a lot of contacts within and outside the agency. Great resume item for all future jobs. It's the trenches, and the rest of the industry respects anyone who has done this job.

    Cons

    1. Stressful. The clients often have a lot of needs, and it can be upsetting and sometimes scary. You are literally meeting sometimes psychotic clients at/in their homes. The majority of the time this is routine, but occasionally it gets to you. Burnout is real. Use your PTO wisely and fall back on your team when necessary.
    2. Lots of paperwork. That's just a reality with healthcare in general. Granted, when I was leaving they were moving to electronic medical records, so this might have gotten a lot easier in the past 2 years.
    3. High caseloads and quotas.

    Advice to Management

I love that you had our backs. However, I would prefer more inter-agency cooperation between units. Try to bridge some of those relationships on our behalf to make integrated services a little easier.
