I have been working at Harris Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has been around 40 years. That's pretty amazing. There are a lot of "old ways" but things are changing for the good (opportunities for staff, focus on training and development, more communication across offices). Benefits are good. Employees own part of the company, so everyone is a shareholder. Because of that, there are additional perks for employees if the company is profitable.

    Cons

Communication. It's getting better but could still be improved.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your direct reports regularly, especially if they are in different offices. Communicate more often, especially company-wide changes.

I have been working at Harris Group full-time

    Pros

Renewed focus for growth and opportunities in the future, both for the company and employees careers. Great people. Employee ownership gives everyone a sense of accountability and a focus on teamwork. Good work-life balance.

    Cons

Not very generous PTO policy. Things can get stressful wrapping up a project with limited budget.

    Advice to Management

Better communication on what the company is doing and why.

I worked at Harris Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

None for the company other than it was located in a nice town with local schools, amenities, and community to raise family.

    Cons

Does not value diversity in either thoughts, gender, or ethncity. Senior management has a very narrow minded view of the world. I am surprise the company has survived this long considering globalization has taken off since the early 90s.

    Advice to Management

Learn to train the right leaders so you have global leaders who value human capital to differentiate your value to your customers. It is the employees that make the difference. Learn from such former CEO like Jack Welch who has instilled this in GE.

"Good engineers trying to work with poor management (Energy Group)"

    Pros

The HGI energy group does a great job attracting good engineers and designers. I really enjoyed working with my peers during my time there.

    Cons

The project management is completely out of touch with the real work being done. Further, the management structure is setup to make it impossible to get everyone working with the same tools and with consistent, quality review. Further, the scheduling of projects often creates unrealistic client expectations and/or artificial work crunches.

Please note this only applies to the Energy division where I worked. I have the impression other divisions are managed much better.

    Advice to Management

Senior discipline engineers who review everything going out the door are desperately needed.

A consistent, quality project management program needs to be put in place where engineering has input starting at the proposal stage.
