Team first and mission first environment, interesting projects, opportunities for diverse assignments and growth in Melbourne operations, pay and benefits in-line with others

Corporate / CEO influence has some negative impacts on employees and customer mission due to micro-management vs strategic management, employees/talent leadership improvement

I have been working at Harris full-time

    Pros

Good corporate atmosphere and a lot of very educated and talented IT staff.
    Decent benefits from day 1.

    Cons

Hard to move up and stand out due to the pool of talent. People get stale in their jobs and frustrated from time to time.

    Advice to Management

Develop your talent and allow them to advance. It only helps you.

I worked at Harris full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Everyone's work ethic. Teamwork with focus on improvement of both processes and technology. Good benefits and pay. Lower level management is sincere.

    Cons

Lost the reputation of being a family friendly place to work. It is truly all about the bottom line - letting long-term talented individual go.

    Pros

I have been working at Harris (Less than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are good, pretty much what you find at other companies. They place a lot of value on their community outreach, so you can find a lot of volunteering opportunities. Their new building at Palm Bay is amazing, but proceed with care because that's probably not where you'll end up working, most of the other buildings are very very very old. Melbourne is quiet and there's not much to do, but it is about an hour away from Orlando and other Space Coast attractions.

    Cons

The recruitment process was actually great, very interesting people, they took me to their new fancy building and were great at following up throughout the entire process. However once I started, I quickly realized that it was all a smoke curtain, there were internal changes, so the person that I was supposed to report to changed, and my current boss has no leadership skills, and no interest in developing the team or making any impactful work, that person is here for the paycheck. I work in the oldest building ever, with furniture and technology from the 90's!!!...and no plans to upgrade anytime soon. Your onboarding -if you are lucky- will be a half-day session where they'll go on and on about how to fill a timecard, give you your badge, maybe some team members will send a 'welcome mail' and then you are on your own. No clear goals, no follow up, no structure, a lot of bureaucracy. This is a company where most employees have been here literally all their lives (30-40 years), a lot of older people who love their status quo, they are not that welcoming nor willing to share information or collaborate with new employees. Some few teams are all new because of the high turnover, which also speaks volumes about the culture (new people don't last very long). They'll tell you this is a 'global' company but there is nothing global about it, and you shouldn't expect diversity or any flexible working practices. It is an old-school organization and apparently they do everything to stay that way. Needless to say I don't expect to stay very long with them.

    Advice to Management

Be honest upfront during the recruitment process, in the long run it is more damaging to your brand as an employer to bring highly talented individuals to an environment where change, new ideas and outsiders are not welcomed. Work with your "leaders", most managers and supervisors have no leadership skills, they get to those positions because of tenure, most of them are 'doers', and would probably be great at executing, not necessarily at leading and developing others.
Recognize that a) this is 2017 (not 1977), b) you have a significant population ready for retirement, if you continue to ignore the need for new talent and knowledge transfer, you'll soon find yourselves with a serious knowledge gap and a bad employer reputation and c) these days practices like flexibility, wellness, diversity or flexible benefits, are becoming the norm (not a differentiator), and you guys are not even there yet!

I have been working at Harris full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some great, knowledgeable people to work with, though experienced employees are slowly getting 'encouraged' to leave or retire. Stock prices at all time high...

    Cons

...but that rise in value is coming from deep cuts to the company. Another big round of layoffs, which when coupled with already low morale has the effect of increasing an already steady flow of resignations. Quality is being sacrificed for the bottom line.

    Advice to Management

Take some pride in Harris's legacy, and care that the long-built reputation is being degraded by what is obvious corporate greed and not concern for the quality of what is produced.

I have been working at Harris full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Continuous efforts to be innovative, career development opportunities, great vacation policy, environment of team work, employee engagement, great locations, employee volunteer program, Global Innovation Center

    Cons

It is difficult to change the culture. So much of the great work Harris does regarding employee engagement sometimes goes unnoticed and unappreciated because some employees refuse to remain open to 'new' and ' different' ideas.

    Advice to Management

Please continue the engagement surveys and action planning. It means you're listening to us.

    Pros

Excellent work life balance, great managers that give you the opportunity to showcase your skills and talents. The ability to work from home, depending on your project assignment.

    Cons

At times it could seem like you're just another number. Corporate, as of lately, seems to care less and less about the employees.

I worked at Harris full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company will be around and is doing well, no worries about it failing.
    Lots of different opportunities.
Corporate support employees see more stability.

    Cons

Most employment is contract work for government,, DoD, etc.
There is a lot of change on company structure, seemed like every 3-4 months there was an upper level or organizational change.
Too much change and travel requirements for me. If you don't live in the NOVA/DC area, expect a lot of travel.
Tons of time spent on answering RFPs, jockeying for your next contract, etc.
    The company expects high turnover.

    Advice to Management

None really. It probably works for former military that are used to traveling and jumping on a plane without notice. It was not good for me. If you want a more traditional, rigid company, Harris might work for you. If you want more flexibility, comfortable atmosphere, and growth opportunities, look elsewhere.
