I worked at Harris Teeter part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1.Somewhat flexible hours
2.Great place to develop speaking/problem solving skills
    3. always busy / fast paced
    4. 401K / Benefits for part time workers
    5. Work with motivated individuals

    Cons

    1. Turnover rate is pretty high, even in management positions
    2. Abysmal Pay raise, if ever provided
    3. You'll also work with some pretty lazy / awful people
    4. Advancement is limited and often unrewarded
    5. Work hours can be changed with little advanced notice

For a first time job to make your own paycheck, it's not a bad job. You stay busy and learn a multitudes of skills (Talking to customers, resolving issues, managing others, etc.) which can be useful later on in life. That being said it's retail and you're going to encounter some pretty awful people and deal with some awful stuff, but that's just part of the job and not every day is going to be awful, but just know you'll have those days every once in a while.

I worked at Harris Teeter part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Most staff and customers are nice.
-It's a good starter job, and they give you annual raises.
-You get bonuses, no matter what job you have.
-There's room for advancement within the company.

    Cons

-Constant shuffling around of management by corporate. It's rare to have a manager, whether a store manager or an assistant customer service manager to stay at a store for more than a year.
-Most of the teenage/early 20-something employees that are hired seem to care more about socializing with their co-workers instead of actually working or talking to the customers, and they never get in trouble for it.
-Products that come in the produce department are frequently bad on arrival.
-Not enough people are staffed in the stores, ever.
-Both upper and lower management play favorites.
-Scheduling isn't consistent. Also "on-call" shifts shouldn't be a thing.
-Cash registers are really old, and constantly break down. Same with self-checkout. Both systems are obviously long overdue for replacing.

    Advice to Management

Focus on friendly customer service, and don't play favorites. Also, hire more people.

I have been working at Harris Teeter part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible with school schedule, bonus checks twice a year, chance for growth if you work hard and speak up. Raises yearly although they are very small.

    Cons

High turn over rate, most customers tend to be condescending, depending on location you may not get a lot of hours.

    Advice to Management

Customer service manager isn't the issue, the managers up top (especially HR).

I have been working at Harris Teeter full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Simple work
    Generally nice fellow employees
    Profit sharing twice a year
    Get to meet interesting people

    Cons

Lack of communication at both store level and between store and corporate.
No support if a customer decides to complain about you, no matter the situation
    The hiring process is glacial
Pay is low for the amount of work that needs to be done (though on par for the grocery industry)
No overtime allowed under any circumstance
High turnover, but not enough new hires
    Next to no training

    Advice to Management

Review training for new employees and new management. Allow some overtime when employment falls below a certain percentage in a department. Relax drug testing rules or increase pay to encourage more qualified applicants. Communicate within stores, between stores, and with corporate. Don't throw employees under the bus every time a customer complains; take time to review the situation first.

I have been working at Harris Teeter part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have been with Harris Teeter coming on 28 years with this company. I worked part-time but started full time with this company working in several stores within the Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina region and also help open some stores within the greater Triangle area. I have gotten numerous rewards for customer service excellence and also for bonus incentives with this company and retirement savings as well if I choose the option of retirement.

    Cons

From the previous comment, especially during after the holiday season and during the winter months they do slashed hours, but when inclement weather increases so does the tremendous workload that carries it especially during times when you will be needed and they will asked you to come in during increase volumes and customers when it gets extremely busy..the weekends do apply too.

    Pros

Decent pay. Good sense of camaraderie. Very independent working system, not a lot of micromanaging. Good retirement savings program and discounts.

    Cons

Hours are slashed in the winter but the workload increases. Customers aren't always the nicest people to interact with. Management heavily guilt trips if you want time off.

    Advice to Management

Allow for more hours in the winter so departments can hire more people. I applied to a part time position because I only wanted 30 hours at most but I'm working at least forty a week
