I worked at Harris Teeter part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    gained good customer service experience

    Cons

will spread hours evenly between cashiers, but they often have a surplus so you won't work very many hours

    Advice to Management

only hire enough people, it's unfair to those who needs these jobs to only be working 5 hours once or twice a week, if they have full availability

I have been working at Harris Teeter part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful customers and management works with you regarding your schedule.

    Cons

Low pay. Too many "bosses". Young and inexperienced Customer Service Clerks can be terribly rude (some are on power-trips) and make poor decisions without thinking through consequences. Horrible lack of leadership on most levels. Next-to-no communication from management unless you do something wrong. No on-going training.

    Advice to Management

L E A D E R S H I P training is desperately needed for ALL positions from Clerks to Store Managers. Stop trying to "manage" people - you need to LEAD them.

    Pros

Great place to shop and be the first to see the deals

    Cons

The management and employees are overworked by labor being cut and quality employees picking up slack for unqualified employees that are never held accountable. The bonus structure is terrible if existent in most stores and you will have very little success unless you are part of the good ol' boys grocery club.

    Advice to Management

Don't fall captive to thinking HT is all that is out there.

I have been working at Harris Teeter full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good pay
    Good bonus potential
    High Standards

    Cons

    No worklife balance
Store Directors do NOT work their 2 nights forcing Co-Managers to work 3 to 4 nights a week.
Executives have high standards yet do not allow enough payroll to keep the basics done.
Management constantly filling holes to complete hourly jobs. Absolutely no holidays or weekends to spend with family.

    Advice to Management

DMs and Higher do not show respect to the store associates. Co-Managers are treated like drones. My advice is to be reasonable. There is a major reason why Management turnover is very high. I see new Management trainees each month to replace Co-Managers who are leaving.

    Pros

    Flexible hours.
Profit sharing check every 6 months.

    Cons

Managers can make rude comments to you. No opportunity for advancement in company. Probably will not be appreciated for your work.
Made to do certain task that should be handled by someone else.

I worked at Harris Teeter part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Employee Profit Sharing Check

There really isn't any other pro besides that stupid check every 6 months. I honestly can't think of any.

    Cons

    -Denied my doctor's appointments
-Refused to work with my availability
-Kept me late on school nights (I'm a high school senior)
-Uniforms cost $50+ adding in jackets and pants
-Not allowed to leave my register to go to the bathroom
    -No water allowed despite heat
-Sometimes did not get 15 minute or 30 minute lunch break

    Advice to Management

You may want to retrain the entire customer service and managers because they lack proper management skills and did not work with their employees to keep them happy and more than willing to work.

I worked at Harris Teeter as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice people, great bonus structure, corporate cafeteria that serves breakfast and lunch.

    Cons

The building and facilities are outdated. I believe that they finally created a maternity parking space in 2016. People are burnt out and there's not much job growth. I never witnessed any corporate culture events, communications, or efforts. The entire business seems to revolve around what's on the front page of the antiquated paper circular. It's very odd. Departments are terribly disjointed and many groups work in "silos". There are many duplicated efforts across the corporate office because there's little communication and nobody knows what anyone else is doing. Most of leadership is older white men, and I noticed a significant lack of diversity in my time there.

The benefits are pretty bad. You get 3 weeks vacation but NO HOLIDAYS OFF - so you end up using one whole week just for holidays. I had health insurance through my contract company but always heard bad things about the health insurance plan at Harris Teeter.

One other thing I observed was that when I put in my two weeks notice, there was never an exit interview or an opportunity to share information or feedback. I think that is a lost opportunity and a con.

    Advice to Management

Hire an efficiency consulting firm to look at how the corporate level is operating - and listen to their recommendations. Change is not a bad thing.

Also, the new generation of workers has different priorities, needs, and ideas than the baby boomers. Listen to them and adjust, and they will likely stay with your company.

    Pros

"Regular employees" have a familial bond because of all of the mistreatment we have to go through.

    Cons

No recognition for all the hard work we do, management is lackluster, and not enough pay for the stress that we deal with.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to why people leave. Listen to our concerns. And please stop entitling these customers to do whatever they want and stop talking to associates in a foul manner.
