I have been working at Harris Teeter full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Profit Sharing, flexible scheduling, forward thinking company in a recession proof industry, decent benifits with an employer backed health plan.

    Cons

Zero autonomy, you will be expected to be married to your job, expect to work a lot of nights and weekends. Holidays are required with rare exception.

    Advice to Management

Your stores may be cookie cutter, your associates are not

I have been working at Harris Teeter full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some of the benefits are good, except their annual insurance deductible is outrageous, $2500, which is a little surprising from a company this size. But you have to be full time to get the benefits and becoming full time is tricky because there are a lot of inside "conditions" to be a full time employee that are not disclosed in the job descriptions or handbooks.
They automatically enroll you into a 401K whether you are part time or full time.
Even part time employees get a paid vacation, but not personal hours.

    Cons

I expected this company to be better than it was. After researching information from corporate sights and other sources, they made Harris Teeter to sound like one of the best places to work at for grocery stores. But, brace yourself if you go to work for this company either as a manager or as a regular employee. There are many "hidden" things you will discover during your time with them. They apparently don't mind turnovers and aren't really willing to pay more than a minimum to bring you in. They don't fully disclose information when they hire you and tell you things that aren't in the job descriptions or handbooks. It's difficult to be a full time employee, and if you manage to become one, you will end up being their puppet. Believe me, the pay isn't worth it. They allow other employees access to your personal information, rate of pay, and hours worked as well. They are NOT as flexible as they claim, and if a manager gets upset with you they will take it out on you by scheduling you bad shifts.
I have yet to have a review, and have received no raises to mention. If you manage to go from part time to full time they give you personal hours based on when you became full time, not when you were hired. So then you have to wait another 90 days before you can even start getting the personal hours.

    Advice to Management

Being a good manager means being a good leader, not just a manager. Good managers don't have to manage their employees. Good managers look out for their employees and are willing to work with those who are good employees. Remember, people don't quit their jobs, they quit the managers.
To the company - stop empowering your employees....it's not working and often misunderstood.

    Pros

    Good People at store level
Some of the customers are great people hat make the job fun

    Cons

Upper management is to worried about lining their own pockets with their bonus that it works they people they “value” to death and pushes them out.

    Advice to Management

You promoted the wrong people and over the course of time it went from an incredible place to work, to a place where everyone wants to leave. That’s terrible for your company and terrible for your customers. What you really need to understand is that in order to take care of your customers, which is your #1 priority, you MUST take care of your employees or else they won’t take care of your customers. They don’t understand that. Way to much disconnect.

I worked at Harris Teeter full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

BBT program is extensive but very informative
    Profit Sharing and bonuses
Great people except you go help out other stores and that gets annoying
Ok schedule except no weekends off

    Cons

Management is set in their ways.
Really don’t like welcoming in outsiders that apply for management.
    No weekends off
    High priced insurance

    Advice to Management

To set the expectations from the beginning what the job entails. Let the people who apply for the job and that go through your training classes, that there is a 50 case limit that you want stocked in an hour and 30 cases isn’t good enough even though the job was getting complete before 3pm everyday. To write someone for not passing a test is absurd. I am thankful for the people I met in my short time there.

    Pros

Local Store like family, at Corp level you are like a number

    Cons

Not enough hours allocated to run department efficiently.

    Advice to Management

Your open door policy is only at store level, Corp level slams the door in your face and totally ignores you.

I worked at Harris Teeter part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    10% discount.
Short staffed, so easy to get hired.
If you like working alone, this jobs for you.
Basically no other benefits or pros.

    Cons

Training is terrible! They have you do all your "training" on computer modules. Then they just abandon you live with customers. Will get huffy if you have an issue or need help, you will since you haven't been trained by anyone. Never formally introduced to anyone, wasn't sure who to report to.
Will try to make you work at times you aren't available.
High turnover, will get angry if you're sick or have a disability that limits you or causes you to miss work.
Entitled customers and "the customer is king" mentality is strong, you will never win.
    Wage is laughable.
    Hideous uniforms.

    Advice to Management

Train better and staff effectively. Raise your wage or expect to be understaffed.
