I worked at Hartford Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Great colleagues in surrounding classrooms willing to help in any way they can to induct new teachers.

    Cons

Very little real, practical support from building management to get settled and virtually no back-up support in the classroom (essential to establish behavior management base) to help teachers follow through with massive behavior issues.

    Advice to Management

Shared classroom TAs or parent volunteers present to anchor teachers' efforts and direction.

    Pros

The Students are the best part of working for this agency!

    Cons

Management sucks, untrustworthy, predators and will lie to save their own souls!

    Advice to Management

It's too top heavy, monies going toward salaries instead of the students!

I worked at Hartford Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I loved working with the students - teaching here was incredibly fulfilling and challenging. There was never a dull moment and I still hear from many of my former students.

    Cons

I was highly disappointed with the support I received in the classroom. Teachers were constantly judged and blamed; extreme favoritism existed. This unprofessional behavior from the administration was noticed even by elementary aged children.

    Advice to Management

Truly listen to your teachers. You hire well-educated and experienced teachers; trust that they know what they need and can have important input into how the school can be improved. Everyone is there for the students but that doesn't mean staff should be abused.

I have been working at Hartford Public Schools full-time

    Pros

There are tough times and many challenges associated with teaching in an inner city environment, but for the most part, the kids make it worth the challenge.

    Cons

Management is top down, there is no effort to speak with educators before making decisions. A new superintendent comes in, a new set of programs are implemented, there is never any consistency.

    Advice to Management

Speak to educators in the classrooms, find out how you can help them in the classrooms. When implementing programs, make an effort for substantive PD and consistent support.
