    Pros

Discount on purchases and rentals - reasonable hours - regular customers - could be a lot of fun when working with the right crew,

    Cons

Totally disorganized leadership -- rude/demanding customers

    Advice to Management

Either get better leadership or just give it up -- no way company will avoid going bankrupt with this leadership

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I work with are some of the best types of people. Generally there is a pretty laid back vibe amongst workers which makes it a fun job.

    Cons

The pay is minimal and there is very little room for advancement or raises. Also we're going out of business due to mismanagement and being sold to a heartless company of liquidators.

    Advice to Management

Don't close the doors figure out a way to do good business suck and not buying 40+copies of the Toby Maguire Spider-Man movies.

    Pros

The people (both the employees and customers)

    Cons

Lack of corporate direction, firing the wrong people

    Advice to Management

In all of your years of housecleaning, you failed to get rid of the one person that would lead to your downfall.

    Pros

    Fun atmosphere
    Easy work
    Mostly cool customers
    Laid back work environment

    Cons

Unorganized shipments (just poorly packed boxes of assorted items)
Items would arrive to the store already damaged
Store was completely overstocked with items that barely sold
    Never received a raise
    Extremely high turnover rate
    Constantly changing policies
    Outdated computer systems
    Hastings also just filed bankruptcy

    Advice to Management

    New computer system
Designated location for every product in the store
    Keep overstock in the backroom
Have a designated warehouse for online product
    More training
    Better communication

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Provided insider industry experience and connections. Enjoyable travel for trade shows. Occasional perks and promos. Ability to expand career experience. On site cafe.

    Cons

Company lacks a clear vision of its future. Work loads continuously grow due to downsizing, ongoing restructuring, and a multitude of special projects/experiments, most fruitless or soon abandoned. Dysfunctional upper management and overall leadership. Questionable HR practices. Very limited support structure.

    Advice to Management

Leadership is lacking and wanted. Training and supporting the staff will improve productivity and morale. Clear plans of action and productive communication would lower frustrations and confusion of employees. Upper management is ineffective and not all members are committed to the company. When a supervisor presents changes and new directives as annoyances and repeatedly complains to their team members about the state of the company it is discouraging to the team and breeds hostility.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people, some of them are decent.

    Cons

The overall employee attitude is sluggish and grumpy. There are literally no employee incentives, no guaranteed raises after evaluation, no bonuses, no starting holiday or sick time off (you have to accrue it 3 hrs at a time), the upper management is pretentious and the benefits suck. During the time i worked there they acquired a new Elvis Presley museum in Vegas and all the Movie stops in the country and when they started performing poorly they laid off enough employees to compensate. Also, if you enjoy sitting in a cramped cubicle situation freezing then this is the job for you.

    Advice to Management

    Where do I start...

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Used to be great management, great employees, and a great culture.
    - They give you a paycheck.
    - When I worked, the health insurance was actually pretty good, and I believe they were even going to offering it to part-time employees.

    Cons

    - Now they have horrible management, poor employees, and a terrible culture.
    - There is an obvious disconnect between the corporate office and the stores.
    - They don't trust their employees. Even with evidence that the last store I was at was losing money to external thieves, corporate still forced us to focus on internal theft.
    - They'll only allow enough hours to schedule one floor associate at night and then wonder why theft is so high.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your employees' training and their happiness. It costs less to have 3 employees covering the floor for a night shift than to lose $300. And they can help you make sales!

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Fantastic coworkers
    - Energetic environment
    - Cool media and trends things to look at all day
    - Alright health insurance and 401k
    - Move up quickly because turnover is high.

    Cons

    - Mandatory weekend days and swing shift schedule
    - Not enough pay
    - Not allowed to clock overtime
    - Lots of pressure from corporate to get sales numbers up in a business which is already dying because media is all being digitized
    - Incredibly understaffed, and good employees are worked to death
    - High turnover rate because of overworking of good employees and not enough hours to train new workers.
    - No stability or work/life balance. Will deteriorate your health.
    - They cut my pay when I reduced my hours to part time so I could attend college again, even though I was working just as hard as I was when I was full time.

    Advice to Management

Pay your good employees what they are worth, $10/hr at one job is not enough to live on without a lot of struggle.
INVEST IN TRAINING HOURS. People quit out of frustration because they are thrown to the wolves, and that costs the company even more.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the people where very fun to work with, and some of the regular customers that I developed a relationship with were enjoyable to help.

    Cons

Management is very unappreciative of employees work. Constant reprimanding for ridiculous things. There was no reward for good work and very little affirmation from management. After a year of employment I was consistently offered around 10 hours a week which is not enough to make any kind of living. They promote and praise employees who don't work hard and don't provide good customer service.

    Advice to Management

Don't treat your employees like they are completely expendable. Promote and praise the right employees.
