I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fun product, pretty good discount, good local work environment and occasional fun events

    Cons

Overall company poorly managed, corporate decisions on product purchasing and distribution were not in line with market demand, retail employees seriously underpaid at all levels, consistently overlooked internal promotion candidates in favor of external hires, tried to expand into tangential tech markets after they had peaked (e-readers in particularly).

    Advice to Management

    Do better.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Interact with customers helping them find new products and interests. Create new displays and end caps to display merchandise. Keep current on books, videos and music.

    Cons

The company does not work well to help with coordinating certain days off to allow you to work a second job.

    Advice to Management

My suggestion is to pay employees a better wage or allow them to work a second job so that they can afford to live a decent life.

    Pros

Great place to work with great people.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

    Don't go bankrupt!

I worked at Hastings Entertainment part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people are great, and you can pick up a lot of hours.
They're very flexible about schedules and will work with you if you have school or other commitments.

    Cons

The place runs on disfunction so be prepared to know a lot about many different things. Customers often try to haggle prices as if it's a flea market.
There's a lot of shoplifting so be sure and be vigilant because they will blame things on you.
    Soda machine is always broken.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to make us clean the bathrooms at least give us the necessary cleaning tools. Paper towels aren't good enough. Also, fix the soda machine.

    Pros

Awesome place to work, nerd utopia!

    Cons

Some tasks that are required are overkill and hard to complete given the payroll cuts that were imposed on the stores.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people are attracted to this company. The merchandise for the most part is great. Great books. Old movies. And tons of nerd merchandise.

    Cons

The corporate office is a joke. They have one, count em, ONE lady working communication for the entire company. That's 127 stores. What a joke.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Innovate. Stop trying to run an edgy, cool, and nerdy shop, with an 1970's business model. It doesn't work.
