I have been working at Hastings Mutual full-time

    Pros

Hastings Mutual has a solid industry reputation and rating. As an employer, they are big enough to offer opportunities to grow and develop in most areas which is great. They are also small enough for you to not feel like you're just feeding the machine, either. People are great overall, intelligent and approachable is the culture here, from CEO down to entry-level. Benefits and 401k are pretty solid, as is PTO. Great organization all around!

    Cons

Given its small-town background and location, it's a bit slower to change than other companies, but there are some big picture plans in place. Some applications/technology are very dated yet the Guidewire implementation is huge and will eliminate that. Older building/campus but it's being updated (slowly). The only odd elements are the "dress-up days" where everyone has to dress up when the Board of Directors are onsite and the parking lot which assigns spots based on seniority. You have to be there 15 years to get one! Having a long walk is not great in Michigan winters.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up in regards to evolving the company towards the future. HMIC has a great history and legacy but you can't rest on that. Rethink some company traditions just because they're traditions; change is going to be an element especially if you want to grow. Otherwise, keep up the great work!

    Pros

Friendly people. You can learn a lot here. Having a cafeteria onsite is nice, the food is good and there's a good variety. They'll pay for your insurance training (not sure on the specifics though). Benefits are just okay, they are neither bad or great. Having an annual bonus program is nice, as long as we can meet our goals. It's an older building but they are beginning a remodeling project which will be nice. As far as insurance carriers go they have a pretty good reputation too.

    Cons

Some reviews have complained about pay, which I'm neutral on. Like their benefits, its nothing amazing, but nothing horrible either. You do receive annual increases though and there are internal job openings where you can get a bigger increase. You get out of it what you put into it. Some people have complained about the location, but that's not really their fault. A lot of work to be done getting Guidewire up and running and some areas feel that pinch more than others.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up, some good things are happening or will be happening. Keep an eye on benefits though as its an area where there could be some improvement.

I worked at Hastings Mutual full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large company in a small community.

    Cons

Very competitive atmosphere making it difficult to build good work relationships. Grossly under paid and supervisor favoritism is extremely obvious.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the way your employees are being treated by their supervisors.

I worked at Hastings Mutual full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good remote work opportunities, supportive organization, decent benefits.

    Cons

Used to be a great company to work for, but over the past few years the drive to replace large parts of the existing technology have resulted in high pressure being put on members of the IT group. Industry best practices are frequently ignored to the detriment of the company and policyholders.

The high stress environment is slowly hollowing out the IT group as key members leave for better work environments.

    Advice to Management

You are not on a sustainable path. It's time to re-examine why you launched your "digital transformation" initiative in the first place and if it's even remotely delivering on it's promises. There are better ways to handle this type of project.

I have been working at Hastings Mutual full-time

    Pros

Good company and the culture is family-like in a lot of ways. The cafeteria is nice a perk to have. You can learn a lot here about claims and insurance all around. Benefits are okay.

    Cons

Pay is so-so. It depends on what your role is though and your experience from what I've heard. You can move up easier in some areas than others. The software system upgrade process can be hectic and challenging since its such a big project.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I worked at Hastings Mutual full-time

    Pros

Lots of wonderful people at Hastings Mutual

    Cons

Bad Management in Commercial Lines, lousy pay, older employees treated badly as HMIC only wants young people.

    Advice to Management

Take some management training courses! HR, listen to what employees are saying! HMIC will never retain people until they start treating ALL employees with respect. It's a sad reflection on this employer that certain supervisors can stay in their positions when so many people are fleeing.

    Pros

    Decent pay, and benefits, 401k

    Cons

Micro Mgt by Mgr's who know nothing about the job you perform.

    Advice to Management

Good employees are the back bone of any good company. They should be allowed to do their jobs. No underwriting integrity.

I have been working at Hastings Mutual full-time

    Pros

This is a active, growing company with plenty of opportunities to get involved and have an impact. The management team seems to really value the contributions of employees. They are very committed to employee wellness, offering healthy snacks, fitness center, and fitness/wellness classes. The other little extras are nice too, like the occasional free ice cream breaks in the summer or the Cinco de Mayo party for example. And the company is very involved in the community.

    Cons

It's a bit of a commute from the major metro areas in west/mid Michigan. While many new technologies have been implemented (i.e. Office 365), the current major system upgrade project will be a long process.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to your employees and make adjustments accordingly.
