I have been working at Haven Hospice full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits. Caring co-workers. Opportunity to give back to my community and help families cope during a difficult time in their lives.

    Cons

Skills required for hire not fully utilized. Too many call-offs due to low census.

    Advice to Management

Staff could be used for thorough housekeeping to assist refreshing rooms while empty, going through supplies to check for out of date supplies, thorough cleaning of equipment in facility.

I have been working at Haven Hospice full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the clinical staff care for their patients and co-workers. The nurses and physicians work well together, great CNA's. I love the team I work with.

    Cons

Horrible upper management and administration. New policies and programs implemented without input from clinical staff that are expected to carry plan out (and you better keep your mouth shut while doing it). Most of us work salaries and get paid for 40 hr week but end up working 60-80 depending on week. Now nurses are expected to be on call to do admissions until 7pm and admissions take appx 5 hrs to do.

    Advice to Management

Pay clinical staff hourly and actually listen to their input instead of telling everyone how great you are and how much you listen to what staff is saying. Most of administration remind me of used car salesmen. You should all get some advise of previous administrators and management. Jim Poole would be an excellent example.

I worked at Haven Hospice full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The mission of the organization is terrific. Caring for the patients and families when they are in need brings real value to your day-to-day work.
    The benefits a good.

    Cons

Healthcare is a highly regulated environment and Haven's response to that is usually some knee-jerk reaction to the latest changes which means the employees are often sent in 20 directions at once and then the decisions are recalled and you go back to where you started.
The company culture is very tense and stressful.

    Advice to Management

Before making major change include the employees who are actually doing the job in the field and get feedback and use it so that the changes that are effective and get the results needed.

I have been working at Haven Hospice full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The reason most people choose to work in this field is for the benefit of the patient and their family. Therefore you are working with like minded people. The patient level employees are the absolute best at what they do despite obstacles.

    Cons

Management from the top down. People making decisions who have no clue what is happening at patient level, or what the Patient level employees are experiencing. Sometimes, other than reading a report which leaves out very important details, have no idea of the needs of the patient & family.

    Advice to Management

You don't need to implement a program that forces managers to 'get to know' their employees. You need managers who, beyond knowing thier job description and how to 'perform' , also know the true meaning of human resources and how to treat people with respect. Also, if there is a problem with the manager, the expectation of the employees feeling free to discuss issues is almost non-existent.

    Pros

Any hospice attracts good, motivated clinicians.

    Cons

Extremely high turnover. Chronic understaffing. Toxic culture from the top down. Zero loyalty to long-standing employees.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate some of the director positions, particularly in IT. Bring IT down to the level of actual customer service to employees. Actually lead this organization from the front, not from comfortable offices.
