I worked at Hawaii Pacific University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

University generates some employment and tax dollars for state of Hawaii; immature incompetent students have a place to go to. Employees do not have to work very much at all, as long as you give easy As, it's all good. It's like working in a middle school but for college pay.

    Cons

HPU is a scam. Employees are treated as retail consultants, selling diplomas. Students pay money and get As. Students are lazy and very entitled, and rude to employees. There are NO academic standards. University was questioned by accreditation board and am not sure it is even accredited.

I have been working at Hawaii Pacific University part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

LMS has many options available (HPU purchased a fully loaded version of Blackboard). Good library functionality. Good campus at Hawaii Loa.

    Cons

Have not raised adjunct pay in 10 years. Poor financial decisions by HPU leadership have resulted in increasing tuition, firing many employees, large classes, and poor organizational culture.

I worked at Hawaii Pacific University part-time for less than a year

    Pros

It was a "work-study" position at HPU and it was convenient to work in between my classes

    Cons

The work was a little tedious; work-study employees at the financial aid office got the filing duty and receptionist activities as well.

I worked at Hawaii Pacific University

    Pros

The tutoring center I worked for within HPU was overall a really great experience. I worked while going to college (at HPU) and they were flexible about class schedule.

    Cons

There were times tutors would get overbooked, especially around finals, and it could be really stressful. You we're definitely expected to keep back to back appointments if you could, and sometimes would have to do group tutoring, which is even more stressful.

I worked at Hawaii Pacific University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

HPU recently purchased the Aloha Tower Marketplace, which will have student housing on the top floor, with retail and restaurants on the ground floor. University has not added student and staff amenities in other locations.

    Cons

Main campus is downtown, with limited parking. Suburban campus near Kailua and Kaneohe needs massive renovations.

I have been working at Hawaii Pacific University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Student diversity is the ultimate here, and just about everyone gets along. There are some good departmental administrators too, although not so many are brave enough to buck the higher ups.

    Cons

Administration is wrong minded. Continuous new hires in business and administration, at $90,000+ salaries, when most faculty salaries are frozen for three years (or at least mine has been) at considerably less. University talks about promoting scholarship and creative teaching, but fails to reward either one. To make the salary issues more aggravating, the Chronicle of Higher Ed reports that female faculty are paid on average $20,000 less than male for same academic tier at HPU. Most of us (except in business or higher admin) are disheartened. Another sad part is our marketing; our own communications and marketing people would do a better job of promoting the school than these expensive outside companies who haven't a clue about our values. The school is in transition, though. It is possible that things will get better if the new president embraces academic priorities.

I worked at Hawaii Pacific University for less than a year

    Pros

It was a fast paced setting and challenging. A great environment working with a wonderful team and superiors.

    Cons

The cons was not coming from working with HPU, it was rather from starting anew in a city like Honolulu. Too expensive to get your foot on hold there.
