I have been working at Hawaii Tokai International College full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Executive Committee has changed drastically for the past year that a majority of the staff appreciates their attempts in being transparent.

    Cons

Still struggling to change the negativity in certain areas of the workplace.

    Advice to Management

Continue to accept input from faculty and staff.

I worked at Hawaii Tokai International College part-time for less than a year

    Pros

It was a good way to gain work experience as a recent college graduate. Good hours. Good commute ("reverse" commute). I had a really supportive and compassionate manager (who has since left). Individual faculty and staff are nice.

    Cons

Overall toxic environment: employees were cliquey and would gossip about each other behind their backs. Friction between administration and school staff. High turnover rate among both staff and administration. Lack of continuity in admin leads to inconsistent or uninformed decision-making. One office oversaw almost all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the school. 5 FT staff were collectively... responsible for: 1) campus life, 2) admissions/new student orientation, 3) international student services, 4) study abroad opportunities, 5) career and personal counseling, 6) student health, 7) registrar, 8) faculty support, 9) student housing, and more that I'm probably forgetting. If students disagreed with a decision from a faculty or staff, they often went directly to the school president to demand the decision be altered, instead of trying to resolve the conflict with the individual staff in question. Led to perception that admin was authoritative in their leadership style.

    Advice to Management

Have more diversity (in gender and ethnicity/nationality) in upper administration. Create individual departments that deal with each aspect of school operations (1 for immigration/international student support, 1 for academics and advising, 1 for faculty support, 1 for registrar, etc). Actually dialogue with faculty and staff, listen to what they say, and implement solutions to create an atmosphere of trust... and stability. Lead by example.

I have been working at Hawaii Tokai International College full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good working hours and benefits. Most employees are friendly. There is not really much more to say about this school.

    Cons

Management should listen to students and employees and not just assume what is best for all. They DO NOT listen to staff and faculty and there is much favoritism within upper management. Most of the students study hard but there are those that illegally work and upper management turns the other way and does nothing to stop this problem. All they care is about $$ and not to improve on education. They advertise... themselves as an American Institution, however, if you do not understand the Japanese ways or act like one of them, they will harass you. If you speak up you will get hammered down.

    Advice to Management

Management should pay closer attention to the high turnover rate. They should listen to surveys and try to improve themselves rather than attacking and pointing fingers to the survey takers. And finally, they should really hire people that are qualified for the job rather than choosing people based on their ethnicity.
