I have been working at Hawaiian Telcom full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay is great Good benefits Room for advancement

    Cons

Revolving door on executive and senior management. Slowly losing benefits. Too many low level managers in charge of positions they have no experience with. Too many sales/marketing people making foolish decisions with not enough input from the technical side of the house. Too many craft employees that have skated by under the radar for the last 20-30 years that have no idea how to do their jobs to this day. Too much... dead weight. Huge lack of communication. Lot of workplace politics. Also do not expect to try and have a life outside of work with this company. Majority of craft positions will be scheduled 7 days a week, 12-14 hrs a day come rainey season, if for any reason you can't make it in you will be disciplined no matter what the reason.

    Advice to Management

In the past low/middle management had decent benefits so the natural transition was after spending a majority of a career in craft, employees with the most experience would become managers. Now that doesn't happen because it's not worth it to leave a union job with good benefits and excellent pay to become management, so

I have been working at Hawaiian Telcom for more than 5 years

    Pros

They pay a solid hourly rate plus commissions & bonuses for sales. Awesome medical benefits, more-than average vacation, union so you have job security. Lots of really nice people to work with, potential to move up if you are so inclined.

    Cons

The systems are very outdated to work with on a daily basis, very slow, crash often. Not much communication between departments. Call Center reps talk to angry/upset people and get yelled at for problems that another rep created. There is not much accountability if you make a mistake, so you end up cleaning up after other reps. Management can be disconnected.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on good customer service than the hard sell. Listen to the advice/input that reps provide - the people on the front line know what the customers really want.

    Pros

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Hawaiian Telcom full-time

    Pros

Good wages, free shirts and an on site gym. Some opportunities for interdepartmental job movement. Recently reported positive corporate earnings.

    Cons

A recent decline in employee benefits. Although a stated environment of employee empowerment the action is employee indifference. Budget restraints on the TDM network in order to expand the IP network.

    Advice to Management

Reinstate the education benefit at 100% of cost and on a voucher system. Give the employees a chance to transition into a new network.

I have been working at Hawaiian Telcom

    Pros

    The employees are like family.

    Cons

There is no training program for management, only for hourly. This hinders efficiency as employees have to learn the ropes on their own.

    Advice to Management

Develop a training program so that employees don't have to rely on one another for process questions & answers. On the job training is not the answer. Develop a mentoring and advancement program. A lot of employees have outgrown their current positions but don't get recognized. Management continues to advance the inexperienced and wonder why the bottom line grows at a slow pace.
