      Positive Outlook

I have been working at Head-Royce School part-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

beautiful campus, awesome and supportive immediate colleagues.

      Cons

change is slow, lots of extra meetings and committees. No collaboration between divisions. poor communication between divisions.

      Advice to Management

to truly respect and promote balancing work and wellbeing, we need to change our fundamental structure of the school: scheduling, meetings, committees, communication between divisions...etc.

I have been working at Head-Royce School full-time for more than 20 years

      Pros

Beautiful campus. Supportive colleagues and peers. Energy from K-12 student body. Keeps you young in mind, body, and spirit.

      Cons

Shift in climate. Transparency and concern of morale as first promoted by new Head is waning. Administration is cautious when communicating with staff. Going through the motions of concern but not following up. Seems to be slowly phasing out non-exempt staff and out sourcing their responsibilities.

      Advice to Management

Respect your employees who have been employed 15+ years as they have the knowledge and experience to help avoid repeating errors in procedures. Include their know how before outsourcing allowing them to work with the hires to insure database can be used by offices. Do not rely on tech responses of how a procedure is working. Ask the employees dealing with the aftermath.

I worked at Head-Royce School full-time for more than 20 years

      Pros

Teaching staff is still fairly strong, as are the students, despite a long period of decline. Better environment for teachers than most public schools.

      Cons

There is a select group of teachers who receive preferential treatment, and by and large the school seems to be run primarily for the benefit of a select few administrators and teachers both as far as duty expectations and financial compensation. Somebody said "it's like the school has been colonized!" and I agree with that statement. Be aware that it isn't uncommon for core teachers can be punished and otherwise...

      Advice to Management

My issues would be directed to the board to make fundamental change so that the culture of the schools, and the community of teachers, can be more genuinely positive. This management/labor mentality is really counter to a healthy private school atmosphere for the teachers. I don't think you will get anywhere with your top few current administrators. I don't expect any big change in this board as far as insight or backbone...

      I worked at Head-Royce School full-time

      Pros

Excellent benefits; friendly people; well maintained facilities

      Cons

Very distrustful environment; leadership shows a lack of understanding and frankly are totally superficial.

      Advice to Management

Honesty is the best policy and something highly lacking. In order for things to really change from the awful days of the former HOS, major changes in upper administration also need to change. The new leadership emerging is quite reflective of the new HOS: superficial, weak and interested only in outward appearances and not willing to put aside preconceived thoughts and feelings.

      I worked at Head-Royce School full-time

      Pros

Lovely campus and facilities, nice food service.

      Cons

The administration doesn't value mature faculty/staff. They do not communicate well. Additionally, the surrounding neighborhoods are regarded as though they don't exist, which creates more problems for the school. The residents are expected to put up with problems the school creates, i.e. noise, poor parking practices, serious damage to streets by HR construction trucks, loud delivery trucks at all hours and more.

      Advice to Management

Time to overhaul your practices; engage in a meaningful way with the school community. Respect differing points of view. Don't label some individuals as "trouble makers" and try to empathize.

"Faculty for more than 10 years"

      StarStarStarStarStar
        Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Head-Royce School

        Pros

The teachers are experienced, devoted, and inspiring. They clearly love what they do, push themselves to improve professionally, and genuinely want students to love learning as much as they do.

        Cons

The administration thinks of itself as forward thinking and innovative, but in reality it does not tolerate dissent. This is a top-down place where decisions are made by top administrators who "survey" the faculty but ignore the results. The new Head has been there for more than 25 years and is not the person to re-invigorate a staid administration.

        Advice to Management

Morale matters! Your intelligent, experienced, highly trained teachers are your most important resource.

        I worked at Head-Royce School full-time

        Pros

The faculty is amazing, humble and truely diverse. The campus is beautiful. Great reputation nationally.

        Cons

The school has been around for a long time. There is a lot of history and baggage and in some ways they have not evolved their management and structures to get with the times.

        Advice to Management

Keep hiring amazing teachers but maybe reconsider the structure and staffing of your admin departments.
