    Pros

Incredible work life balance, interesting work, more execution focused and less pitching, no weekend work, good bonuses.

    Cons

Brand notoriety might be hurt given the Denver base, but the senior management all held leadership positions at bulge bracket firms

    Pros

This is not really an organized investment bank, its a number of senior bankers from other firms who want to outsource their compliance effort to a centralized team in Colorado. For bankers who don't want to be focused on compliance, it could be a good fit.

    Cons

The Colorado "leadership" skims 40% of the deal fee off the top for limited support. They are supposed to dole out deals to senior bankers based on the banker's expertise, however, they hold and execute deals themselves. I had my own firm before joining and the model did not work for me. In addition, you can get stuck with a banker you may not want on your deal if you source one not in your target area.

    Advice to Management

Have more than one MD negotiate engagement letters. Either set up real offices for the teams to work in or reduce the skim off the top.

    Pros

MDs keep a high percentage of realized revenues.

    Cons

Very little support or deal flow comes from corporate. In bound inquiries generally stay with management if they are good leads. You are basically on your own.

    Pros

The Denver office has a great culture at the junior and senior levels. Great marketing manager and smart colleagues around to learn from something new everyday. As a intern, working at Headwaters is an opportunity to garner lessons you can't get in a classroom. Hardworking is being appreciated.

    Cons

    None that come to mind

    Advice to Management

The marketing team needs more personal, too much stuff needs to be done!!

    Pros

Senior management drives a culture and attitude that makes this a great place to work. Employees that don't fit this culture are not hired, full stop. The result is a dynamic, enthusiastic, team oriented workplace. People are given the tools, the direction, and the encouragement to reach for their full potential. No glass ceilings or bureaucracy permitted.

    Cons

This is a hard charging culture. If you believe in your ability and prefer having the freedom to make your own destiny, you'll love it. If you prefer a more structured, low risk - low reward environment, this is probably not the place.

    Pros

I was always excited to come in to work here. The culture is great with people who are fun, laid back, and cool, but everyone is extremely intelligent and hard-working. Its a collegial atmosphere from the Executive level to the analysts, and I truly feel like I learned the business of investment banking and the energy and work that it entails and even at a junior level, your responsibility is up to your abilities.

    Cons

Like some others have said, you will not get your hand held here (not that they do not help or teach you, rather you're given independence), so that may not be for everyone, but if you are in investment banking, that isn't something to worry about.

    Advice to Management

Keep of the culture, best of luck to the firm.

I have been working at Headwaters MB full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The level of experience, knowledge and commitment to clients is unusual for a middle market investment bank. There is a real sense of camaraderie and common vision at all levels in the firm. Folks work together to drive results for clients. Given the growth across many industry practices, mid-level professionals will get a lot of opportunity for responsibility, professional growth, and financial reward.

    Cons

This is a results-oriented environment with high energy. Rewards come from results. You must be committed to that kind of entrepreneurial culture to thrive at Headwaters.
