    I have been working at Health Canada full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    * Very rewarding to be involved in meaningful public work.
    * The kind of experience you get as associate director or very experienced scientist in company, you will get at entry level.
    * In general friendly coworkers.
    * Diversity at work place.

    Cons

    * Loss of some of the skills you acquired in Ph. D.
    * Post-doctoral, Ph.D and Master's degree holders are hired at same salary level.
    * Promotions are very difficult in general.If you get promoted, workload increases dramatically, which may require additional working hours.
    * Only few employees know how to become managers/Directors. Its unclear how people get promoted.
    * You need to know French in general to progress in career.

    Advice to Management

    * Start Ph. D and post-doctoral candidates with atleast 15,000$ higher than Masters degree holders or atleast 4 steps higher. If necessary create an additional level for Ph. D as entry point, different from Masters.
    * Concepts of Managers are old and must be gone and replaced by Division Directors and Associate Directors.
    * Provide clear cut idea to employees how they can progress in their career.
    * Send Ph.Ds to conference atleast every second or third year. Give equal opportunity to all employees.
    * Hire best person for job by interviewing all over the country.
    * Keep the salaries competitive by looking how much academics and private companies pay at same level.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

    Pension and benefits, decent salary

    Cons

    Bad management, discriminatory behaviour, workplace harassment

    Advice to Management

    Hire better middle managers. The ones I saw there were awful to people and didn't take the time to understand their staff. Also, learn how not to be racist jerks.
