I worked at Health Management Associates full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are many opportunities to work with professionals from the public health sector that were the big wigs at Medicaid. Medicaid, and other public financing of health care is the focus or target market for business at HMA.

    Cons

Many. The value of any employee is usually ascertained by how many years and projects were undertaken at a Medicaid office. If you haven't worked at Medicaid then your value to HMA is limited. Research assistants (RA"s) can still move up to consultants but moving on to senior consultant maybe difficult. Otherwise, ambiguity in assignments and how they should be performed, for research assistants, is common. RA's receive assignments from various offices that contain vastly different aspects of health care. Some of these projects require knowledge of behavioral health while others might be simply data driven while others are physical health. These areas of care, and the skill-set and knowledge required to meet the demands of these projects, are different enough to where even principals who specialize in one field don't usually work on projects that are in another field different from their own specialization. However, RA's are just expected to know what to do and how to do it with no direction or getting questions answered.

    Advice to Management

Standardization needs to take place. More training for RA's and a path to advancement that is clear and concise would improve morale and help retain talent. Growth needs to slow down and refine the structure and culture of the organization in order to improve efficiency and improve morale.

    Pros

The particular HMA hospital that I worked for was accomodating to working mothers and flexible with scheduling.

    Cons

The pay rate compared to surrounding hospitals was far less than competitive. Management would act like they cared and that employees opinions mattered but it was clear that they didn't.

    Advice to Management

Become more visible by department rounding and implement a better competitive salary package.
