A decent company trying to improve

Mar 28, 2021 - Program Manager in New York, NY
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Healthfirst has been around for 25+ years, and it is well known and established in the Medicaid/Medicare space in New York City. It has some of the hallmarks of a legacy healthcare company, such as bureaucracy, favoritism and entrenched systems. Leaders at the company are trying to challenge this and succeeding somewhat. The company also treats employees fairly in terms of benefits and compensation.

    Cons

More equity could go into the promotions and hiring decisions at the senior level. A lot of lip service is paid to changing this, but it still has a feel of the "good old boys" club at the top -- although this is worse in some departments than others. In addition, a lot of emphasis is placed on healthcare compliance -- certainly a good thing. However, it can really slow down projects a lot.

    Pros

Healthfirst is a great company to work for but there's favorism in management. Benefits are sub par.

    Cons

I had an abusive manager who maybe about 6 employees quit because of his abusive and demeaning attitude. But the Director refuse to d anything about it.

    Decent Place to Work

Dec 27, 2019 - Manager in New York, NY

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Healthfirst cares about developing a positive culture, pays fairly to attract good talent and is respected in the community it serves.

    Cons

For those who truly care about serving the community, the work here is removed from the members we are impacting. Especially if you are in "white collar" functions such as Marketing, Finance, or Product.

    Highly Toxic, Political Environment

Jun 21, 2019 - Anonymous Employee in New York, NY

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good benefits, generous PTO accrual and carryover, great 401(k) match, pay is competitive for a non-profit health insurer

    Cons

Honestly hate coming here every day but I need a paycheck. Healthfirst has some amazing, dedicated, highly intelligent people, who are passionate about the mission and members. The biggest issue here is LEADERSHIP at the highest levels of the organization, or the lack there of it. Orders and directives are issued on high from Mount Olympus with a lack of clarity or direction. (Think: I want XYZ to happen! Go make it happen and get it down tomorrow!) If a lower level employee (or as leaders more commonly refer to them as – Resources – because this place really is a post-apocalyptic dystopian nightmare) tries to surface concerns or explain processes, they are quickly dismissed. Worse yet there’s a terrible case of opposite day – direction you may given one day will do a complete 180 the next, leaving you to question your sanity. But you’re not crazy, the people leading your department are woefully out of touch and have no understanding of how to get things done in the 21 century. Fairly sure the last time one of the VPs in my department rolled up his sleeves to understand how basic processes and technology work was during the Nixon administration (enough said). So, there’s no hope for guidance, just constant berating for not having a crystal ball to understand the SVPs ‘vision,’ which changes daily. Then, when you’re totally on the ropes and utterly demoralized, you’re docked for a lack of ‘vision’ or ‘creativity.’ Healthfirst used to be an amazing place to work with great colleagues and great environment to not only learn and grow professionally, but to also feel like you were contributing to something bigger. However, with all the toxic, political non-sense, it’s hard to keep sight of that.

    Cons

I absolutely love working at Healthfirst and feel fulfilled with the work that I do. This has been the place I have really started my career and I have grown tremendously since I have started at the company. I only hope to grow more at Healthfirst. If you show dedication, a good attitude and hard work, it pays off.

    Unfulfilling

Mar 5, 2019 - Assistant Vice President in New York, NY
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Take a hard look at the company culture.

    Cons

This is hard to write, because there are good people here. Healthfirst has good potential, but the atmosphere is rife with confusion and there is little organizational discipline. As a result, it usually takes thrice the effort to get one simple thing done. It's Sisyphus pushing a boulder up the mountain. It is a low functioning organization that operates at a CMMI level 1 maturity level. There are few processes, procedures or training in place, and a broken company culture has lead to low employee morale, low employee satisfaction, and high attrition (employee turnover). It's a revolving door.
