I have been working at Healthy Directions full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Healthy Directions has a very entrepreneurial environment which allows people to run with good ideas. Employees are extremely enthusiastic and collaborative--and everyone has a strong desire to move the company's mission forward. There is also great work/life flexibility, excellent wellness programs for employees, and good benefits.

    Cons

The health insurance program could be stronger. We need more good data to drive decisions--data that's easier to access.

    Advice to Management

As we're going through changes in strategy--pick some clear areas of direction and stick with them. Sometimes it feels like there are frequent shifts in priorities. We also need to be more data driven, at all levels.

    Pros

Company sells products that really help people and that makes you feel really good about your job. There is a lot of importance put on living a healthy lifestyle. That being said, the environment is not that healthy.

    Cons

The work environment is awful. Cubicles where you have to listen to your neighbor talking to their kids, doctors, arguing with their spouse. The office space is really more for a home, a kitchen that isn't big enough to accommodate all employees, appliances that are always broken, toilets that are so low to the ground that you feel like you're squatting. And the parking situation is a joke. Only the special few get prime parking in the building. Everyone else has to hike. It's amazing that the company is doing so well with all the unhappiness around. But, a job is a job.

    Advice to Management

Don't just ask your employees about things, take action!!

I worked at Healthy Directions full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible management with opportunity for growth. Provides a fair work life balance. The people there are great to work with and make it fun.

    Cons

Senior management is a mix of long term, entrenched veterans and newer, more forward thinking executives. Can cause for mixed messages and direction.

    Advice to Management

Try to communicate more to all levels of the company. Seems like some were in the know while others are not.

I worked at Healthy Directions full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company has a long, successful history as a doctor lead, health supplement company with a direct mail only business model. The company has great products and the people who work for the organization are passionate about health and helping seniors. Coworkers are friendly and it is a relatively relaxed 9-5 pace compared to other companies.

    Cons

The company has struggled to move beyond the success they have had in the '90's and early '00's and make the changes necessary to modernize and move the business forward. Over the last 2 years, reorganization, lay offs and 1-off firings have become part of the culture. Consequently, the relationship between the executives and mid to low level employees is not one of collaboration and trust.

    Advice to Management

Make the investments necessary to help the business function effectively in the year 2014--operations, technology, employee training. Empower and trust employees, inspire them to be more than 9-5 pencil pushers.

I have been working at Healthy Directions full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A more secure place to work at than in past years due to better leadership of the current CEO and former CEO last year who both have led the company on the right track with monthly strong sales growth.
Potential for better atmosphere and communication among employees with relocation to our new building at the end of this year.

    Cons

Not much to speak of except in the advice to Management (see below).

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your hard working employees below you more and recognize they are the reason for the company's growth and success also. Listen to their imput.Don't distance yourselves from them. Try to put your employees first and yourselves last.

I have been working at Healthy Directions full-time

    Pros

The foundation for success is there. Everyone works extremely hard at trying to meet and exceed expectations on a daily basis.

    Cons

There is a level of cruelty that runs ramped with- in Senior Management and how they treat their employees. There is no room for growth, job security does not exist.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge the hard work your employees do, acknowledge they exist. Do not take them for granted. Respect them.

    Pros

Great products. You really feel like you're helping people. Especially when we hear SO many rave reviews about out products and how they're helping people.
Good opportunity for growth. You just have to be a participant and help make it happen. Most managers are always open to new ideas. Especially the new upper mgmt team.

    Cons

We are coming out of a 2+ year struggle so some people still feel a little insecure about things. However, things look better and it's an exciting time. Lots of new adventures around the corner.

When you go the extra mile (or two!) it doesn't seem to be appreciated much. Seems l like it's just expected to put in 12 hour days if necessary. Most people don't mind but once in a while you have to feel like someone has noticed.

    Advice to Management

Check with the worker bees more often. Everyone's putting forth 110+ effort and we need to know it's being acknowledged and appreciated.

Good company mission--helping others to age better

    Cons

    More communication would be helpful.
Need managers who are more decisive.

    Pros

Healthy Directions does good things for people. Their products are high quality, and they know what's hot in the marketplace.

    Cons

The company seems to have lost direction. They got behind the marketing curve in the early 00s, and they don't seem to be able to catch up. Much of what's going on now seems like desperation.

    Advice to Management

Look at long-term goals, not just what will make the next quarter's numbers look good. The strategy from 10 years ago was sound, it was just the execution that was faulty. There's no need to go hunting for a new strategy.
