I worked at Hearst as an intern

    Pros

I've interned on both the print and digital side at Hearst, and I can definitely say that digital is where it's at if you want real hands-on experience. The digital teams are smaller so it's more of an all-hands-on-deck situation. You'll get bylines and real tasks as opposed to grunt work. And once your internship is over, everyone is more than willing to help with job search/write recommendations. Would definitely go back and work at Hearst Digital Media in a heartbeat.

    Cons

If you intern on the print side, you're much more likely to be stuck with grunt work. Transcribing, mailings, errands, etc. It's still a valuable experience, especially if you make the effort to reach out to editors in departments you're interested in and let them know you'd like to help, but not everyone is receptive to that. It's really what you make of it, but you won't be getting any bylines or important projects.
