I worked at Heartland Community College part-time

    Pros

I loved working at HCC, and I enjoyed the people I got to know in the Adult Education Program. Things happen and change quickly and the staff were always making the most of every situation. I appreciated how professionally they treated their part time staff and the professional development offered throughout the college.

    Cons

State budget cuts put our department at risk and eliminated parts of the Adult Education summer program. It's no fault of the college, but rather Illinois' tumultuous budget issues.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing and keep recognizing the importance of Adult Ed in the community!

    Pros

Got to build relationships with staff, being in a leadership role, making a difference in the lives of students, and getting very solid in subjects you tutor.

    Cons

The pay was low and you couldn't get many hours because of work-study limitations.

I have been working at Heartland Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Our program is well-thought-out, colleagues are intelligent and versed in current practice, and we have lots of choice in terms of how we teach.

    Cons

Instructors have little say in some issues that concern us such as where college is headed & how money is spent.

    Advice to Management

Look into progressive forms of management. HCC can be a better place for students if instructors' views are considered.

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

The best part about working at HCC was working within Academic Affairs with Deans/Instructors.

    Cons

    1) The worse part was working with Deans/Directors that were insensitive and unknowledgeable about African American staff and students; transgendered individuals and anything outside of their comfort zone.

    2) I was not rewarded for taking on more duties. The only people rewarded are those in their friend zone.

    3) The blatant abuse and animosity shown to those that do not agreed with someone outside of the student affairs Director/Deans group.

    Advice to Management

Training and implementation of Diversity and Inclusion program for staff to work with African American students and staff

    Pros

Most of the people were always willing to help anybody out. There was a sense of community among the employees.

    Cons

Some of the employees seemed very exclusive to their certain groups, which kind of made them difficult to approach.
