I worked at Heartland Human Care Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people work here. People who are smart, passionate, care about the mission, and making the world a better place. Benefits are good.

    Cons

The pay is about average for a nonprofit but could be better. Technology and resources available to staff vary greatly depending on which program you work in.

    Advice to Management

Provide more training opportunities for staff of all levels.

I have been working at Heartland Human Care Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits were really good in terms of the health insurance coverage and the PPO/time off.

    Cons

Management was to top heavy, although there was flexibility with job schedule ,due to the large facility size, there always seemed to be to many opinions coming from upper management on way things were done and disorganization as staff was constantly changing around.

I worked at Heartland Human Care Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get to witness great impacts in some vulnerable children's lives

    Cons

I can go on and on. All the staff in SAFEty programs are overworked and unappreciated. Family Reunification Specialists are constantly targeted for "not doing what they are supposed to do" when there are a hundred things to be done in just eight hours and ninety nine are done, they will be yelled for one that couldn't be done. Management does not listen to the staff, make their own rules and can be intimidating at times. The stress level is so high that employees feel that the job will negatively impact their overall health. Constant burn outs lead to high turnover. There is no good amount of training. You have to learn by your mistake and beware when you make one mistake they will be all after you. Workload is excessive, especially during influxes and other times too. Management will never hear you and expect you to work like a super human. All shelters under SAFEty have terrible work environment. Management tells you to work according to priorities but there are so many priorities that one cannot complete all of them and it will be hard to even start tasks that may not have priority. Family reunification specialists also have to help with residence a lot and it impacts their goal but Management will not care. This company is very dysfunctional and needs help.

    Advice to Management

Remember that human rights are also for employees. Think of why your company has so much turnover. Appreciate the staff who care about your clients and company despite being so much underpaid. Be kind and considerate.

    Pros

good PTO and 401k, pay is low but higher than other NPOs

    Cons

They have a union but HR fires people without notice and without letting you contact your union representative so they don't follow Weingarten Rules.

It is HOT in the summer and is is FREEZING in the winter.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees the same courtesy you allow your patients!

I worked at Heartland Human Care Services (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely rewarding work with some of the most vulnerable populations in the nation. There are a wide variety of career choices and several different populations HA serves. There is some room for advancement, although that could require going to another part of heartland. If you have a union position, you won't work a hair past 40 hours a week- which sometimes is unheard of in the social work world. Great benefits, vacation time, sick time. 95% of the people who work there are there because of their hearts, the other 5% are fulfilling educational requirements for their license. Anyone who chooses to stay in non-profit has a lot of educational student loan pay offs (after ten years) if you have a lot of debt- this is an option for you. Overall good experience working here with great people.

    Cons

Do I need to say this? The pay. Of course every non profit has horrible pay especially for entry level

    Pros

Working with the program participants was rewarding. In terms of scheduling it was consistent to your shift and offered opportunities for overtime if wanted. Fellow Co-workers made the job more bearable and the company itself is part of a union and provides good benefits.

    Cons

Upper management had a way of undermining staff and seeming incompetent.

    Advice to Management

Learn to treat workers with some basic respect.

    Pros

HHCS is a supportive work environment. Managers care about their staff as people as well as employees. There are opportunities for professional development and advancement within the organization.

    Cons

Programs are too larger defined by funders versus the mission, but HHCS is moving in the right direction.
