I worked at Helen of Troy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are a plus. That's about it.

    Cons

Depends what department you work for, there is no OT at any time, PTO is difficult to obtain and you feel like you are back in High School. HR needs to be more professional, they will never protect the employee even if it's said it's an open door policy. If an employee raises an opinion or their voice, rest assure that employee will be fired or pressured so much they quit.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to stop favoring managers, VP's or anyone with a higher power. Stop hiring your friends HR!

I worked at Helen of Troy (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It used to have a great family environment and mentality among the working staff and management.
Took care of the employees and they had a voice that was heard.
Employees and their families used to be a priority, now it's just for shareholders.

    Cons

New management is a dictatorship out to impress themselves and the shareholders often unfortunately at the expense of the hardest working employees.
Employee turn over has never been so high.
Not the once great company El Paso was proud to embrace as a major employer. May as well just relocate to the north east where management all hail from anyway. Just a matter of time.

    Advice to Management

    Resign

    Pros

New office building. Free coffee. Close to shopping so it's easy to run an errand while at lunch. There is plenty of opportunity for the "take charge" type.

    Cons

Lack of direction & conflicting directions from middle-management so difficult to accomplish a single goal without a committee, so things take twice as long as it should. There are silos and non-team players. No organizational effort to build a "work family".

    Advice to Management

Senior management has to open their eyes. Need more effort on training middle-managers to lead versus dictate. You can't keep "beating" senior engineers and expect to deliver quality product. It's a team. You hired us, senior engineers, to do a job, so let us.

    Pros

This company has the potential and groundwork to be AMAZING. The size, physical work environment and type of work should be fun and rewarding.

    Cons

Disorganized management makes it impossible to do a good job, regardless of strong work ethic. Directions you are given one day can be completely reversed the next day. They are more focused on putting out memos about culture than they are at actually correcting the culture.

Independent, intelligent discourse is not encouraged. Try to have an independent thought and you are ostracized for not following leadership direction (whatever it happens to be that day). Frustration and negativity in many departments keeps the company from being what it appears to be from the outside. Applying for other jobs brings the question why one would want to leave this lucrative employer in the city of El Paso? Unfortunately, it is like a dysfunctional family, everyone keeps the abuse quiet and pretends the bruises are accidents.

Total lack of direction from management makes it impossible to accomplish a goal.
The company is going to pay a high price for their lack of concern and care for their employees. Well educated, experienced employees are leaving and when new hires come in, unless they are dregs, they will NOT stay. The company needs to hire an outside firm to come in and clean up the terrible employee treatment. This is the only way they will salvage any decent employees.

The pay is mediocre at best, but unfortunately, in El Paso, it’s just enough to keep you hostage; that is the reason they get by with treating employees so poorly for so long, due to lack of employment options. God help them if any other decent employers come to town. I hope and pray that it is not like this in the other divisions across the country and the world.

    Advice to Management

Someone (hire an outside firm, HR has too much to lose) needs to take a look at the actual unethical, often illegal, employee treatment practices in certain departments, THEN take action, not excuse it and ignore it.

    Cons
