I worked at Helmerich & Payne full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay was good. Company benefits were excellent. Employee discounts were average.

    Cons

Not interested in improving any methods. Got to stick to the plan, suggestions for improvements are taken as challenging attacks by incompetent "leaders" Stuart-Finger. Before you know you get fired for the slightest thing.
Lots of snakes in that building, mixed with some good folks as well

    Advice to Management

Talk to the people, especially when suddenly a valued employee is in HR being fired. That would be a good time go ask some questions! One side of story doesn't make it legit, do an investigation!

I worked at Helmerich & Payne full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Play the game right and you go far. Every day is different in the field. A wide area of nature's best.

    Cons

Away from home a lot. Hard on family life. Be carefully. It takes 1000 at-a-boys to get rid of 1 ah-shi-!

    Advice to Management

Everyone is an engineer... Listen up. Watch. Pay attention.

    Pros

    Summer hours
    "Jeans on Fridays"
    Ample parking
    Modern rig fleet

    Cons

    Management
    Poor benefits package
    New company culture
    Company vision is non-existent
    Pettiness

    Advice to Management

Clean out management across the company and promote those with knowledge and skill, not butt-kissers. So many good employees have either been laid off or left of their own free will that the talent level has fallen tremendously. How do you retain the employees you have left, and how do you attract new talent? "You can now wear jeans on Fridays!" Welcome to the 20th century, H&P.

I worked at Helmerich & Payne full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Always have top of the line machinery and equipment. A few great co-workers became like family to me.

    Cons

Safety regulations make it impossible to do the job the right way. There are so many steps involved with safety, you spend more time doing paperwork and JSA than actually doing the work. If you follow the safety procedures, it seems like everyone hates you. If you have a lazy person on your rig, he will be the first to get promoted, simply to get him off of your rig. Then, that person is replaced with another lazy person that came from another rig because they wanted to get rid of him.

    Advice to Management

Simplify safety procedures. Some JSA's are a joke and it literally takes an hour to read them. Get to know your crews. Show up to the rigs a little more often so you can know who's doing a good job and who isn't rather than simply going by what your rig manager tells you.

I have been working at Helmerich & Payne as a contractor

    Pros

The company is growing, fast. Lots of good talent in their workforce. Opportunities to grow with the company.

    Cons

Some of their management are very inexperienced and are more focused on personalities rather than personnel assets and creating an accessible, structured environment. Haphazard approach to processes and procedures.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to work with your staff, utilize and develop their strengths. Don't dwell on the little things....focus on the big picture and establish enterprise structures for that growth.
