I have been working at Henderson County (North Carolina)

    Pros

The people are great to work with and the bonds you make are strong. Great pay for the area, and better benefits than anywhere else.

    Cons

Long hours and crazy swing shifts

I worked at Henderson County (North Carolina) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits. No formal dress code. Henderson County has a lot of good people working hard for each other and the community. Nice town and local environment.

    Cons

No room for advancement as top positions (and/or large chunks of payroll budget) are squatted on by below-average to terrible employees who are effectively grandfathered into the system. Someone with outdated skills that has been at the County 20+ years could make double or more the salary of someone who is relatively new but talented and relevant and in a roughly equal position. The end result is anyone under ~50 (in...

    Advice to Management

To half of you probably not reading this - please resign. To the other half that cares enough to read this, don't let your peers' lack of involvement, forward-thinking, and empathy keep you down. Support the people that report to you, show them that they are more than coin-operated productivity robots. Don't let your peers in management throw them under the bus to save their own hides. It happens far too often to good...

I have been working at Henderson County (North Carolina) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The folks I worked with were generally helpful, professional, and friendly. The benefits are superior based on feedback from staff at other counties.

    Cons

Upper management (with no prior hands-on experience in our area of expertise) are unfortunately the ones (in some cases) that also make the decisions that affect lower level employees. Some things seem to be done "because that's the way its always been done" or with no consideration to best practices or how it would be run if it were a business (if it were, there would likely be changes in management and/or the business...

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff and consider / take heed of their advice, particularly on issues that they are dealing with directly, and where mgmt may have little or no experience. Not sure if the county manager is aware or concerned with matters within our department, but he and the commissioners SHOULD BE.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Henderson County (North Carolina) for less than a year

    Pros

Good benefits, good insurance, paid bi-weekly, use of Credit Union, paid holidays / vacation

    Cons

We are overworked and underpaid. Their is a major disconnect between management and lower level employees. Most of the employees seem to be miserable.

    Advice to Management

Get a clue that many of your managers are unprofessional incompetent brown nosers who control their workers by fear and intimidation....get to know your lower level employees.

I have been working at Henderson County (North Carolina) full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Wonderful opportunity to help children as it pertains to getting them the best technology available. District most always willing to purchase technology that enhances the learning experience.

    Cons

Pay doesn't seem to be based on performance and doesn't always align with the State Salary Schedule as it should. Management always looking for excuses not to raise pay according to performance.

I worked at Henderson County (North Carolina)

    Pros

Most departments are fun to work in and provide a sense of commradery although there are definite exceptions. The majority of departments have very little turnover and there are seasoned workers who are helpful, however there is at least one department that has an insane turnover rate and therefore you never know the different personalities you will have to deal with. Several of the department supervisors are great to...

    Cons

This again is so dependent upon the department you work in, most of the supervisors that have been a supervisor for a long time (8+ years) are best ones to work for! The departments that have quite a bit of turnover are usually horrific and there is absolutely a reason for it- some departments have simply 'added' new employees but the departments who are filled with 'less than 5 year' employees would be best avoided....

    Advice to Management

Hire the senior management who is so unprofessional -retirement should be forced upon her. There should be more attention paid to confronting and fixing the ineffective employees and supervisors and give more support and praise.
