I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time

    Pros

The pension is a plus, but that's only if you're able to become vested. The educational opportunities available to employees were also a nice perk.

    Cons

1.) Unethical behavior supported by management. 2.) Poor communication by lower-level management. 3.) Backstabbing and spreading rumors by co-workers.

    Advice to Management

I've known several former employees who were wonderful at their jobs but burnout got the best of them because of the lower level management and low morale. You're losing good employees and I suggest you find a way to fix it soon.

I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great employees who have done more with less for years and years.

    Cons

This organization is the most money, personnel and common sense starved place to work I have ever seen. Manager do not have the dollars or the people to get the job done. Money is always at issue, even for simple infrastructure refreshing. Leadership has been unstable since the governance change of 2007, so manager and line staff have no feeling of being cared for and don't believe administration can solve the issues of budget shortfalls, retention, aging infrastructure, siloing and poor performance.

    Advice to Management

Clean house. Clearly, senior management has failed - especially in the nursing hierarchy. Why do you continue, from CEO to CEO to allow mediocrity to continue?

I have been working at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nurses are great, medical/surgical residents and attending staff are generally pretty good.

    Cons

Leadership is lacking and a culture of mediocrity pervades HCMC. There is a lot of "dead weight" in the lower level and middle level administration that does nothing useful and does not enhance the quality of medical care. There is a boilerplate mentality and no one asks what more they can do. Many clerical workers are lazy and/or inept. A lot of workers have a bad attitude.

    Advice to Management

Change the culture to reflect putting actual patient care ahead of "blah blah blah," lots of empty words.

I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great co workers on the same level, busy place, processes offered for improvement are actually taken in consideration which is rare these days. Close contact with patient care.

    Cons

Management is horrible, ruling by fear rather than leading. Union is pretty weak although the only thing management is a little tentitive with. Pyramid structure is very solid i.e. upper level nurses asking MA's under them to send a fax with the fax machine right next to them so they can joke around with the MD to get in good with them. Micromanaged and correction is fear of losing job even when it's really minor. No positive correction.

    Advice to Management

Get beyond the managers with open and honest communication and you will see a different story than you have been spun. Not just with the office politics but with how people are being managed. Not feeling important is creating the revolving door effect and the management is pretty much saying well, there are lots of people out there that could take this job..not really caring if they are qualified or not.

    Pros

I had to quit this employment contract to get paid - my manager wouldn't respond to how I could put time into system so I could get paid - ignored every call, email for weeks, until I left - Now giving harmful reference. Mislead about job but would have been more forgiving if had been paid as expected.

    Cons

    Disappointed in honesty and communications

    Advice to Management

Be fair to employees, even Contract employees -it will make it easier for you to find qualified people and to keep them - if you're mad they didn't stay, you should have paid them

    Pros

I like the patient population that they serve. They serve the people that need healthcare the most.

    Cons

There's a lot of racial discrimination although they claim to be diverse. They hire people from other cultures and race then start to discriminate against them. If they think that one race is better than the other, then they should only hire people of that race. If you are not from the preferred race, you will be overworked and abused.

    Advice to Management

They need to practice diversity or change their mission statement. HR need to take immediate steps to work with management to eradicate racial discrimination.

I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, decent hours, great benefits.

    Cons

Atmosphere was very cliquey, personal politics often interfered with work being done. Supervisor micromanaged.

    Advice to Management

Leave the petty stuff to children. You're a hospital with people to care for. Get your priorities in order.

    Pros

Good pay , good experience with patient care thats about it.

    Cons

Management is horrible! If they do like you they will make your life miserable. It doesn't matter if you put 100% in your work they will mess up your schedule to the point that you are not able to work those hours and then fire you. The shifts that they provide are 1st, 2nd and 3rd. None of those shifts are the shifts that they wanted me to work. They decided to make up their own hours for me to work. The hours are mid-shift, which is from 10 to 7. They do not give employees breaks when it's busy. Do not work in a place that don't want you! They will make your life miserable.

    Advice to Management

    Horrible!
