I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They are one of the few places left to have pension and Union benefit and cater to low income or homeless patients.

    Cons

They are running like a business rather than true health care, only interested in numbers. They have spent the last fives years expanding to keep up with the competition. However the last year they have been Millions in the hole now causing the middle staff and now lower staff to be cut.
The union has less pull anymore, we are lucky to get a 1% raise each year.

    Advice to Management

You need to look at your spending rather than keeping up with your competition. You overbuilt trying to increase staff to cover new increased goals of patients. You spend too much money on lean teams and out sourcing buisiness companies to evaluate how to run things efficiently. When all you need to do is meet with staff members whom actually do the work to tell you how to better things. How much money has been waisted on that?

I have been working at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great hours for outpatient services
    Diverse patient base
    Great medical and retirement benefits
    Decent PTO

    Cons

Poor mid level management that is very dismissive of your concerns
Frequently asked to have meetings during your lunch hours
Organization doesn't seem to care about their employees

    Advice to Management

If you want to keep your employees you need to start showing that you care about them, validate their concerns and get rid of the "cancers" in your department

I worked at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Intentions are good and the place does the best it can. Care is good, but the place is a little rough around the edges and very confusing (unnecessarily) to navigate.

    Cons

HCMC's heart is in the right place, but a never-ending emphasis on costs and an ongoing residual "county" mentality results in a frustrating culture for people with career experience elsewhere in the real world.

    Advice to Management

Get back to basics and stop trying to be all things to all people.

Great experience for students looking for health care experience and exposure

    Cons

It's an unpaid position, which isn't ideal.

I have been working at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Staff, pay is reasonable, equipment is good. It is a teaching hospital and a well known one at that, the residents come from all across the country to learn here and we have an amazing staff.

    Cons

The clientele is the uninsured, head cases and people who really cant handle life and they take it out on you and everyone else. This is not a gripe or a joke, this is a county hospital for the poor, uninsured or people who have been coming here for years and don't know any better.

    Advice to Management

Pay employees better and they will stay longer. Hire more security and install metal detectors so the employees feel safer.

    Pros

A lot of areas where you can learn a lot. Despite someone else's comments that they racially discriminate against staff, that has not my experience. I work I a very multicultural and multiracial environment and feel like most of my coworker's are happy in that regard. Patient population is even more diverse, given its a safety net hospital.

    Cons

Management doesn't always make decisions in a practical manner or in a logical order of progression (top dogs). Each unit has its own culture and some are more insular than others -- some in a good teamwork way and some in a "we are better and more important than other units" way. CaRe has had issues with unfair expectations (wanting HCAs to be responsible for more than one one-to-one patient at a time even when rooms not adjacent) and with not responding when you need help because you are having to choose between patient and personal safety.

    Advice to Management

Take your staff safety seriously -- this includes environmental issues. I've heard five staff members complain that the timing of your snow brush use leaves the outside slippery early before they salt it and I saw managements written response to one of those people, basically saying it was convenient so too bad. With less and less parking available in the area since the stadium opening and management havibgcregular events to encourage public transportation, you need to understand that more people are arriving early for their shifts so having it salted a half hour before shift change may not be good enough.

Have a plan in place to use NAs appropriately and advance them to HCA with intentional steps. Really use your HCAs on the floor over NAs and do t send new NAs where they aren't ready to work as per policy.

    Pros

Good pay, decent hours, great benefits.

    Cons

Atmosphere was very cliquey, personal politics often interfered with work being done. Supervisor micromanaged.

    Advice to Management

Leave the petty stuff to children. You're a hospital with people to care for. Get your priorities in order.

I have been working at Hennepin County Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

HCMC has good benefits, the people I work with in pharmacy are awesome. I generally think HCMC is good place to work.

    Cons

There is a lack of communication between different departments, which means we have consistent problems that are hard to solve. Lots of change and disorganized processes.
