I have been working at Henrico County Public Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Opportunities for professional development, strong Central Office, high technology integration, variety of school choice, promotion of internal staff, reimbursement for graduate work, visible in the community, often absorbs the increasing cost of health insurance without passing it on to staff

    Cons

Budget is often tight with few to no annual raises, resources inequitable from school to school, few opportunities for paid professional development, part-time hour restrictions for paraprofessionals

    Advice to Management

Promote more paid professional development when the raises are far and few between, continue to find ways to help us work smarter not harder, continue to eliminate outdated or redundant practices.

I have been working at Henrico County Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wonderful staff, great students. Rewarding career, when you can close the door and just be with the students. Decent health benefits.

    Cons

Central Administration continues to add more initiatives, contrary to what the Superindent likes to say. Excellent, experienced teachers are leaving to pursue other careers as the County Administration does not respect those who have 15- 20 years experience. Workload is significantly more for the mathematics subject area than most, so plan on lots of outside time.

    Advice to Management

Be sincere when you ask for input from the teachers. We are well-educated and truly know what's best for our students, as we work with them daily. Use the salary scale and move up along the steps, and also reward your experienced teachers. Perhaps 10-years move up one step, 15 years up 2, etc.

I have been working at Henrico County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

As long as your heart is in the right place (helping students become successful), this is a great job and the pros will out weight the cons. Also, the amount of vacation time we get is always a bonus!

    Cons

    Workplace atmosphere, upward mobility, pay.
Pay does not keep up with inflation (that is when we do get a raise across the county). There is little upward mobility unless you intend on getting a degree in administration or a doctorate. The working atmosphere is pretty awful and benefits are weak compared to teaching in other states.

I have been working at Henrico County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff is awesome. Everyone really pulls together as a team, especially during hard times.

    Cons

School County is very segregated, who have the "haves and the have-nots". It is also very differ culture to move are transfer to new schools.

    Advice to Management

Create equality among students and teachers. Some teachers and students have very different educational experience based upon what side of town they live on.
