    Pros

Employee owned. Long-term commitment to employees. Benefit package is excellent. Work/Life balance is dictated by you, not by anyone else!

    Cons

Large company with many moving parts so you can get caught up in the machine if you don't pop your head up every once in awhile. Bad employees don't get terminated fast enough.

    Advice to Management

Take time to talk to your employees one on one. I know we are a huge company, but it goes a long way to have someone from upper management take the time to get to know you professionally and personally. More company outings would be a plus.

I have been working at Hensel Phelps full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have worked with quality people my entire career with Hensel Phelps. I believe that we hire the best and develop the best people in the industry. We also are employee owned and that gives the employees great latitude in decision making and innovation. If there is something you want to pursue as a employee, most of the time it is supported by upper management. Ideas are free flowing and welcomed to keep making HP the best company in the market.

    Cons

I would like to see our employees mentor the younger staff better. I have made it a goal to really teach the younger staff and shorten the learning curve.

    Advice to Management

I would like to see the quality of life program truly implemented, most of the con statements are probably "we work too much" and I'm not conveying that. But when we can give people days off or go home at a decent hour we should, and not make employees be at work just for the sake of being there. I think that would help with some of the morale with the younger staff.

    Pros

Hensel Phelps is an employee-owned company that retains talented employees that are highly engaged and strive to improve the performance of the company. Great opportunities often present themselves for those looking for a challenge - the camaraderie is strong from top to bottom.

    Cons

The demand (time) is high at times, however improvements have been made on work / life balance. Make sure that compensation is consistent between titles that are performing the same.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen and respond to your employees .

I have been working at Hensel Phelps full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working at HP means you get to work on a wide range of projects. The estimating team is SOLID and the upper management is always looking at people's goals. This means there are endless opportunities to grow. The compensation is unbeatable.

    Cons

There are definitely a good amount of managers that still embrace the "my way or the highway" attitude and are not willing to listen or embrace new ideas.

Work hours is long and you get very little holidays or vacation days.

    Advice to Management

Focus on teaching management positions how to manage.
Focus on interpersonal relationship vs dictatorship.
In the end, construction is a partnership. Just because we are the general doesn't mean we shouldn't respect what the subs have to say.
Be open minded! Some of your bad managers might be driving your hardworking employees away.

    Pros

Working with and/or managing a group of professionals that all have a vested interest in the company as well as the success of each project. Being surrounded by individuals that are all true stakeholders provides a level of work ethic, competency and teamwork not commonly found elsewhere in the industry.

    Cons

Being tasked as a Stakeholder from the start of your career drives a level of expectations from the company and if you're not prepared to make commitments to the organization such as travel and an above average work load, this can be harder than some individuals are willing to invest.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be a leader in the industry on training and growing your people and the organization will always be a top performer and the best company to work for.
