I worked at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I met the love of my life

    Cons

Cronyism. Bullying. Drug & alcohol abuse. Sheer incompetence. Gross mismanagement. Sexual misdeeds. No real chance of progression. Deterioration of mental health. No recognition for working hard.

    Advice to Management

Your staff are not cogs in some grotesque machine, nor are they bums on seat. Training, wellbeing and support are things people value. That said I’d love to advise them but, frankly, They would never listen.

I worked at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Civil Service Pension, generous holiday entitlement which increases with length of service. Staff suggestion scheme can work. Good pension scheme.

    Cons

Tax manuals are often ambiguous, confusing, and outdated. Staff morale was low, but there was scope to be proactive in changing things via the Staff Suggestion Scheme. There were too many dysfunctional aspects to mention. Can get stuck for years or even decades at the same grade. Lack of diversity at the very top. Staff appraisal process too bureaucratic and longwinded, involving monthly meetings, and having to keep records of examples from your job as evidence. Software can be terrible to use (impossible even) - the new penalties raising tool (PDAC) being a classic example.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the momentum to simplify and digitise admin processes for staff and taxpayers alike. Keep all processes and forms to a minimum. Minimalism and simplicity are the keys.

I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Helpful and friendly colleagues who try to do right by the customer as much as possible. Work / life balance is ok. Flex time means you can work up hours for extra time off. Somewhat easy to progress up the ladder.

    Cons

Partly due to the public sector pay freeze you are likely to be paid quite a few thousand p.a. less than a similar job in the private sector. Management is generally negative and don't appreciate personal circumstances. Work is extremely repetitive and dull. IT systems are archaic and frustrating to use. Buildings are run down (however this may change when moving to regionalcentres ). Beurocratic hurdles to complete your job effectively. Unfair treatment for disabled staff. Unhappy staff (but I suppose it's kinda fun to be angry at your employer as a group). Once you work for HMRC there is an attitude that you're stuck forever. It's very claustrophobic.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff as people, not just as statistics. Make it seem that you care for people other than yourself. New directors seem to be doing a better job than Linn Homer ever did but still not enough to not seem like a heartless employer.
