I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The private sector will value your inside knowledge. Flexi time. Decent leave/Mat pay. In some areas the people are both competent and fun to work with. At higher grades a good work-life balance is acheiveable. Pro diversity.

    Cons

Poor salary. Poor management. Awful recruitment policy (now only have to complete an e-learning package to be considered fit to sift applications/conduct interviews. Internal movement is via massive candidate lists that get drawn up every couple of years, very little say in where you will end up/no control over your career). Systems that don't work. Processes that waste effort. Middle management that act as obstacles between senior leaders' vision and frontline staffs' eagerness to improve their work environment. Lack of recognition. Harsh KPIs. A crippling fear of the right-wing press which prevents innovation. Very hard to climb the ladder from a frontline post to one with any level of autonomy. Working in those frontline posts is so stressful it is hard not to let it affect your home life. It is not uncommon for contact centre advisors to break into tears on a Sunday in anticipation of work on the Monday.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff. You may think that they are just being negative but perhaps that is a product of their work environment and, more importantly, perhaps they are also right to say that things should be improved.
