I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The standout conditions for work at HMRC are the flexible working time and pension. The pension options are 22% paid into a stakeholder account, or a final salary scheme (8% of salary contribution) - these are the gold standard for pensions in almost all workplaces I have been in. The flex-time scheme is also good if you have caring responsibilities.

    Cons

There is a high turnover of staff, both contractor and permanent. Senior Managers are very old-school - and believe in saying "I am your boss, do as I say" (even if wrong). Unless you enter at grade 6 or 7 the chances of promotion to this mid manager level are very low, you can be stuck at SO level - which is demotivating. Office politics seems higher than most organisations that I have been in.

    Advice to Management

There are still to many senior managers who only got their jobs by waiting around for thirty years, the lack of talent is astonishing.
