Good work life balance but poor pay and progression opportunities.

      Pros

Good work life balance with flexible working hours. Understanding and supportive management for the most part. Responsibility for your own work can gives a great sense of achievement.

      Cons

Progression opportunities in technical tax fields severely limited outside of the inspector training program (TSP). Program is only open for applications once a year to start the following year, there is no advantage for internal staff over external and success is based on assessment centre performance rather than qualification and or/experience. As a result many experienced staff either stay underpaid at lower grades becoming frustrated or leave to work in private firms where their experience is valued and rewarded. There is also poor representation of minorities in senior grades for a department that is very diverse.
