I have been working at Herb Chambers full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Down-to-earth management, fun but serious people, good compensation and team atmosphere. Room to grow if you show initiative and are a team player.

    Cons

Longer hours but this is an industry standard, work-life can be a struggle but this is mostly prevalent during the busiest times of year where you make the most.

    Advice to Management

Keep adapting to the changing industry. There needs to be a bit more team-building here to help bolster lower-performing sales people. New-hire training wasn't the best but the new management seems to be doing a much better job with the on-boarding process.

    Pros

The company offers decent training and there is opportunity for growth. Herb is an optimist with a great attitude, which trickles down to a positive work environment for his staff. The CEO also brings consummate change/ideas and helpful feedback. Both seem to genuinely care about their employees. From a dealership level, there was a pleasant morale and my colleagues made it an enjoyable place for me. Had I not had to relocate, I would say I would be pleased to still be working there.

    Cons

Required to work most holidays and there are long hours (but I guess no one is really working 40 hour work weeks anymore?!?). But, there was this unspoken guilt (especially if performance was not up to par) when you want to take your well-deserved time off. There was an applied pressure that was felt when falling behind quota. In terms of benefits, it needs improvement and the health insurance contribution could be much better.

    Advice to Management

Working doesn't feel so much like work when you feel appreciated.

I worked at Herb Chambers (More than a year)

    Pros

nice property and inventory but making sales comes down to push

    Cons

shoddy sales managers, no commitment to employees, lousy hours

    Advice to Management

To see a man build a business empire and exploit, yes exploit the majority of workers with extreme hour requirements, lousy pay in general, no management job security, no real benefits and no sharing of his wealth through profit sharing...the workers should unite and refuse to work for less than a living wage.

I have been working at Herb Chambers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Operations Manager is great. Herb exudes optimism. Profitability is created and sustainable only if you have a team that is not afraid to lose their job.

    Cons

CEO is not interested in what it takes to build a long lasting team. I am afraid Herbs direction is changing due to the new CEO.

    Advice to Management

Don't talk about putting employees first...do it.

I worked at Herb Chambers full-time

    Pros

    Good sales people. Good coffee.

    Cons

Firing 7 people without provocation to give a new general manger's friends jobs... Including firing a 22 year veteran of the company to hire his friend with no improvement to the department.

    Advice to Management

Represent the values you espouse. Stop pretending to be a Globe "Top Company to Work for" -actual be one. Maybe Herb just buys the title, so it doesn't matter but demoralizing your staff doesn't increase sales or customer satisfaction.
