I worked at Heriot-Watt University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work environment. DC is a fantastic place to live in, specially if you're young.

    Cons

No vacations for consultants (it's up to your boss), no benefits either

    Advice to Management

Performance evaluation should be more important. Hiring by experience and education not simple "recomendations"

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Heriot-Watt University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

An excellent job if you do not have any aspiration or ambition. Salary is excellent taking into account workload. Money always on time, generous holiday allowance plus building closure days (24/12-06/01 off work and you get pay for it) and 100% sick pay.

    Cons

If one is ambitious and want more - no chance! A rigid structure based on old people, sorry experienced employees. In order to get promoted one must wait until someone above him will find a better job and vacant a place or die. It is a pyramid, I was once told by the big cahoona sitting at the top, and there is no way around.

    Advice to Management

This is the only institution I have ever experienced a negative motivation from my boss. I was told no matter what I will do there will be no pay raise or promotion. So I can do circus tricks or sit on my hands all day long, it does not matter.

I worked at Heriot-Watt University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Dynamic place to work, where you can make things happen. Truly global minded, diversity is really valued by management and staff

    Cons

Very difficult to be promoted. Some contracts are very limiting career-wise, makes it difficult not to consider moving on to a different institution

    Advice to Management

    Keep the global vision

I have been working at Heriot-Watt University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Great campus. An organisation whose aims I believe in. In most areas good opportunities for personal development.

    Cons

Can be a bit anoying travelling out to the campus by bus everyday. In some areas can be difficult to get promotion as staff turnover is generally quite low.

    Advice to Management

The regrading and promotion process could be clearer. The current process feels deliberately vague and like it is aimed at making your application as difficult and unlikely to succeed as possible.

    Pros

Nice looking campus, flexible working hours in general the atmosphere is quite relaxing. Sadly there are not many good things to say about this university.

    Cons

    - Poor Management
-Teaching quality is bad and therefore will affect its reputation in a few years
    - Old buildings
    - Limited Career opportunities
    - Lots of internal problems
    - Bad food quality
    -Inefficient IT
    -Inefficient HR

    Advice to Management

    - Improve quality of teaching
-Improve quality of research, this will certainly need the change of the head of certain schools
-The phd student support is very limited, change that
