    Negative Outlook

I worked at Heriot-Watt University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work environment. DC is a fantastic place to live in, specially if you're young.

    Cons

No vacations for consultants (it's up to your boss), no benefits either

    Advice to Management

Performance evaluation should be more important. Hiring by experience and education not simple "recomendations"

I worked at Heriot-Watt University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Met some lovely people and developed skills up to a point. However, no real opportunities for progression until someone retires/quits etc.

    Cons

Senior officers who bully lower grade staff are extremely protected, because they are deemed to be 'indispensable' to the organisation whereas lower grades are not (even though they are the 'engine room' of getting things done and get to know every nook and cranny involved in navigating working at a University). Often felt like there were meetings about meetings. Not left with a great sense of the place as a whole but the majority of staff I worked with were great. There is also a culture of blame which is pretty prevalent.

    Advice to Management

Zero tolerance of bullies at all levels. Utilise the education and background of some lower grade staff - especially in relation to succession planning. People are often overworked and there are absolutely no rewards for it.
