I worked at Herman Miller full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company that allows and promotes employee development, professional networking, and is a tremendous community partner and advocate.

    Cons

Sr. and Mid-management professionalism, integrity, leadership abilities vary greatly.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the whole employee by truly caring for others and their well-being and not only your personal success. Every good leader knows their success is only as good as the overall success of the team and ensuring their team members are doing value-added work. Coach and mentor your people

I worked at Herman Miller full-time

    Pros

Good benefits and decent pay. Depending on the department the hours can be quite regular. Very good company, will take care of you.

    Cons

Management can be difficult to deal with and in factory it can be difficult to move up even with a degree. Seniority takes precedence every time no matter how bad the worker is.

I worked at Herman Miller full-time

    Pros

Fairly good work/life balance; average benefits

    Cons

Be cautious if you desire to make a difference...the culture rewards those who keep their head down and don't ask questions. Consensus based culture defeats agility and in the end the CEO makes the decisions anyway. Believe this used to be a good place to work but unless true leaders emerge in their contacting market, it is hard to see any long term growth.

I worked at Herman Miller full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, good products, and great workspaces.

    Cons

Management is more concerned with talking behind people's backs, afraid to empower employees, and lack the ability to truly become a globally connected company. New ideas are constantly seconded guessed or dismissed altogether. As a whole, the mid, senior and executive leadership lack the vision, poise, and experience to inspire their employees to do great things.

    Advice to Management

Be leaders! Stop worrying about your own personal career growth and actually invest in your subordinates. A little empathy towards the lives of your employees will go a long way to the companies success and your own. Embrace new ideas and allow employee growth and movement to internal positions.

    Pros

Amazing people with very high intellectual horsepower. Wonderful products with an amazingly open and inviting culture. Great work-life balance (abused by many).

    Cons

The pace of work is agonizingly slow. Not because people aren't working hard or they don't want to move fast, but because everyone in the company's management is allowed to second guess every decision without being involved in the process. This leads to some really nasty politics at the senior and executive levels - gamesmanship and positioning which unfortunately tears up good/smart employees.

    Advice to Management

Define. Empower. Hold accountable. Stop the executive 'drive-bys' that kill autonomous thinking and destroy employee morale. (Not only does it damage the people but it REALLY slows down your development cycles.) You have an unbelievable organization with amazing people. Let them shine and punish the political leaders that are out for themselves.

Great benefits like quarterly bonuses and corporate discounts. Health insurance through Aetna is a lot better than the one I came from. People that work here are very family friendly.

    Cons

Company is based in Holland which means if you live in Grand Rapids its a half hour drive. They need better communication from upper management with their employees.

    Advice to Management

Better communication with your Work Team Leaders

    Pros

Good Benefits. They have a Great, buy an extra week of Vacation option.Fairly clean environment (171st Plant A). Some friendly employees

    Cons

If your a hard worker. You'll go NO where in the company. Because you are the person that is expected to get the production done. If your a slacker/do nothing type of person. You'll move right on up the company ladder. And women........Lets just say I wouldn't let my Mom or Sister work there.

    Advice to Management

Communicate to your employees. Your Really not that far "above" them. Judge/Promote people by how hard they WORK. Not on their Gender.

    Pros

They talk a good talk and portray a great image. Any positive reviews from people here are still in their honeymoon period. They tell customers the importance of creating great spaces for employees to work.....yet do not do the same. They only have these "great" places where customers visit.

    Cons

Once you learn what the truth is on how they actually value people, they hypocrisy becomes unbearable
Pull back the curtain and it is ugly. Full of mistrust, people losing their jobs because others are threatened by their work and productivity.....while those that do not produce are allowed to stay

    Advice to Management

Walk the Talk....create a culture that people CAN DO great things at Herman Miller. Get new executive leadership that can be bold, brave and can create a great place to work at HM
