I have been working at Hermes part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's pretty flexible and can fit around other commitments. I can plan my deliveries to suit my timetable. My field manager is very friendly and supportive and the other couriers are encouraging and generous with advice for newbies. There are some fuel, insurance and other discounts available.

    Cons

It is what it is, which is a courier job. The pay isn't great and it can feel like drudgery at times. You don't get paid for time spent organizing your parcels into delivery order, although this takes about an hour to do. It's not for everyone.

I worked at Hermes full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good relationships with some colleagues and couriers.
Company car although mileage rate is very low.

    Cons

    Don’t know where to start!
Pay is quite low for the time and effort you put in. Should easily be a £40k salary not £27k!
    Very long days sometimes 12-14hrs!!
Constantly receiving calls and texts even in the evenings and on your days off.
5 over 7 rota meaning every other week you work 7 days.
Not allowed time off in November/December as it’s Hermes busiest time.
Constantly covering other FMs areas meaning sometimes you are looking after another 6 areas as well as your own 3.
Lack of support from higher management.
Told when to take your holidays.
Areas changing all the time meaning you could be working over an hour away each day.
Absolutely no work life balance at all.
A bonus scheme which is unrealistic to achieve in full and if your off sick during a 6 month period you don’t get anything!!

    Advice to Management

Look after your FT better. If it wasn’t for them recruiting/training/retaining couriers you wouldn’t have a business at all. FT are on the frontline taking all the flack from the couriers for all the daft ideas management try and put on them. Pay the couriers more. Some couriers still on 45p per parcel which is why you have a high turnover.
