I have been working at Hershey Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Very little... biggest thing is the name "Penn State" on your resume.

    Cons

    - Low pay for people who are actually supporting the entire health system, not just one hospital anymore.
    - Horrible staffing levels (outside of clinical positions especially). If you come here, be prepared to do the amount of work 2-4 people would be expected to do at any other health system, but only for the pay of less than 1 person.
    - The worst work-life balance I have ever seen. Senior management absolutely does not care about work-life balance... at all. You will regularly be expected to work 50-60 hours per week as a salaried employee, and that doesn't count work you need to do at home.
    - Terrible planning by senior management, where nothing is proactive and you are asked to do major projects at the very last possible minute because they didn't plan anything.

    Advice to Management

Get your stuff together. Start planning and using strategy. Biggest thing: start treating your employees like you actually care about them and appreciate what they do, and pay them for the jobs they are doing. Start thinking about staffing departments at the appropriate levels for what is being asked of them too.

    Pros

Best learning experience. Magnet environment allows professional development for nurses. Union for nurses keeps fair control for job bidding/shifts and leave requests.

    Cons

Some prejudice towards minorities. Lots of cliques

    Pros

Ability to grow within the organization through leadership and development offerings. Ability to experiment with Innovative ideas. Great opportunities exist

    Cons

Work life family balance is challenging - some leaders need to be more supportive of life balance. Employee engagement and burnout needs to be a priority in the organization.

    Advice to Management

Leadership needs to walk the talk every minute of every day during every interaction.

I have been working at Hershey Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people I work with in IT are knowledgeable and very hard-working. They are also fun people to work with.

    Cons

Leadership hasn't set a clear vision for the future. Many people in leadership positions have never worked anywhere else. This isn't a healthy environment for people coming from the outside. There is no room for new ideas. Experiences and knowledge of those who come from the outside are not valued.

I have been working at Hershey Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefit package, very smart people to work with. Vacation days are good and health insurance is also good. I really like management just wished they paid more.

    Cons

Very low pay, and it is almost impossible to schedule time off because they are so understaffed. It would be nice if they paid more.

    Advice to Management

This is a very low salary, and we are understaffed. It's a great hospital but not sure how long I'll stay just due to the low pay.
This is in comparison to nearby hospitals who starting rate is around 28 an hour as well as a sign on bonus. Would be nice if hershey did more to retain nurses.

Cliquish, unprofessional, gossipy, bullies, favoritism, preferential treatment given to some
Does not listen to suggestions for improvement
Walks around aimlessly looking to socialize
    Limited job advancement

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your staff, they are the ones that make you look good.
